Tim Walz plans on ‘waking up on Nov. 6 with Madam President’ – Washington Examiner
In a recent appearance on *Jimmy Kimmel Live!*, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz discussed his campaign alongside running mate Harris as they approach the 2024 presidential election. During the show, Walz shared insights about his background as a social studies teacher, his recent debate against Senator J.D. Vance, and the political landscape leading up to the election. The conversation included light-hearted jabs at former President Donald Trump and Vance, particularly regarding Vance’s reluctance to address whether Trump won the 2020 election. Kimmel humorously pointed out that such evasion became a focal point of the debate, while Walz expressed a desire to move past divisive issues. A notable moment arose when Walz remarked he hoped to “wake up on Nov. 6 with Madam President,” which elicited cheers but also prompted laughter from Kimmel, who interpreted it playfully. Their dialogue intertwined serious political issues with comedic elements, highlighting the interplay of current events and electoral campaigning.
Tim Walz plans on ‘waking up on Nov. 6 with Madam President’
Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday night as the Harris-Walz ticket begins its media blitz with about a month left before the 2024 presidential election.
Walz and the show’s host, Jimmy Kimmel, discussed various topics, including Walz’s past as a social studies teacher, his campaign, and the recent debate against Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), the running mate for former President Donald Trump. Kimmel and Walz made multiple snide remarks about Trump and Vance, including the often-discussed topic of the Jan. 6 riots.
After beginning the discussion with an acknowledgment of the tragic Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attacks and Walz’s experience as a teacher, Kimmel pivoted to the debate, particularly the part when Vance was asked if he believed Trump won the 2020 presidential election.
“That seemed to be the biggest moment of the debate, when you talked to J.D. Vance, and you asked him ‘do you believe Donald Trump won the election,’ and he wouldn’t answer,” Kimmel said.
“That should have been the lead, don’t you think? 85 minutes before,” Walz interjected.
Kimmel then quipped about Trump’s former vice president, Mike Pence, and the Jan. 6 riots.
“Yeah, it’s crazy, although you have to remember the last vice president who said he thought Trump lost the election wound up being chased out of the Capitol building,” Kimmel said.
Walz talked about moving on from the past and then made an awkward comment suggesting something quite different from what the Minnesota governor intended.
“We get to turn the page on that, and I plan on waking up on Nov. 6 with Madam President,” Walz said in a serious tone.
The audience cheered the comment, but Kimmel, noticing how Walz’s words could be interpreted, joked about the vice presidential candidate’s malapropism.
“I just want to be clear, you won’t be waking up together,” Kimmel said while laughing. “Unless you guys have gotten closer than we thought.”
“No,” Walz said while laughing. “I have a problem about not being specific with my language. Thank you for that. You’re specifically right.”
The conversation returned to Walz’s time as a teacher, and Minnesota’s governor told of an incident in which he claimed he saved a student’s life who was choking on a Polish dog when he had lunchroom duty.
“One of my first years in there, I went over to the freshmen table,” Walz recalled. They’re getting kind of loud, and I’m like, ‘fellas, calm down,’ and I look over, and a kid has milk coming out of his mouth, turning kind of blue. I look down, and half a Polish dog there, and I realize he’s choking on a Polish dog. So I grabbed him, and I wondered if it always worked, and it does. I gave him the Heimlich and popped the Polish dog across the room.”
“I got lunchroom duty every year after that,” Walz joked.
Walz and Kimmel eventually returned to more serious topics. They concluded the conversation with Kimmel repeatedly saying how nice he thought Walz was, ending with an interesting compliment.
“Honestly, and I can come up with no higher compliment than this,” Kimmel said. “You seem to me like the kind of guy who cleans the lint out of the dryer after every use.”
The audience laughed and cheered.
“Every use,” Walz replied before laughing.
