California Democrat seeks to remove dissenting members from school boards in a bid for ‘inclusive’ control.
A newly overhauled California bill is causing controversy as it seeks to authorize school boards to remove any member who objects to the state’s strict orders for “inclusive” policies and curricula.
Assemblywoman Mia Bonta (D.), the wife of California attorney general Rob Bonta, has revised Assembly Bill 1352 to explicitly prohibit school boards from contradicting existing laws that require inclusive policies, practices, and curriculum. This change has raised concerns about potential retribution against dissenting members.
If the bill becomes law, school board members who propose ideas that go against California’s diversity mandates could be removed by their colleagues with a two-thirds vote. This move has been criticized as an act of “tin-pot tyranny” by Lance Christensen, vice president of education policy and government affairs for the California Policy Center.
This measure is part of a broader effort by California Democrats to suppress resistance to the state’s pro-LGBT educational regime. Despite opposition from conservative groups and individuals, the influence of teachers’ unions and Democratic leaders has largely prevented significant challenges to progressive policies in schools.
Recently, Governor Gavin Newsom (D.) condemned a protest by Los Angeles parents against school board-sanctioned LGBT Pride activities, while the Education Department launched an investigation into a Southern California school district for rejecting LGBT curriculum. These actions highlight the ongoing battle over educational policies in the state.
To push her new proposal forward, Assemblywoman Mia Bonta used a legislative tactic known as “gut-and-amend,” which allows lawmakers to replace previously approved language with new policies. This maneuver bypasses the usual hearing process and can expedite the passage of controversial measures. A.B. 1352 still needs to pass the Senate before it can be signed into law by Governor Newsom.
Despite questions about the assemblywoman’s disregard for standard legislative procedure and the backers of the bill, Bonta’s office has not provided any response.
