Texas school district prepares for migrant influx.
Brownsville School District Takes Action to Help Migrant Families
Special Meeting Called to Establish Services for Safe Processing
The Brownsville Independent School District in Texas is stepping up to help migrant families in their community. With the expected increase in migrants at their door after the expiration of Title 42, the school district is seeking out ways to “mitigate” the situation.
On May 15, the Board of Education will hold a special meeting to recommend approval for the “establishment of services and/or a lease to aid in the safe processing of migrant families in our community.” The plan is in collaboration with the City of Brownsville and comes at no cost to the district, according to Superintendent Rene Guiterrez.
With schools closing for the summer on May 30, the buildings will be largely empty, making them an ideal location for processing migrant families. The school district’s initiative is a proactive approach to help those in need and ensure their safety.
Brownsville Sees Increase in Migrants
Brownsville has seen a significant increase in migrants, with over 15,000 crossing the river near the city during the last week in April. Most of the migrants are from Venezuela, and the city’s CBP station has been established since 1918 to address immigration issues.
Texas National Guard Rehearses for Mass Migration Event
To address the situation, Texas National Guard soldiers have rehearsed a tactical movement exercise that Governor Greg Abbott claims is the fastest response to a mass migration event at just 30 minutes. However, President Joe Biden does not plan to send any more active-duty soldiers past the 1,500 troops already on the Mexican border.
The Brownsville Independent School District’s initiative is a positive step towards helping migrant families in their community. It’s heartening to see organizations come together to address a pressing issue and ensure the safety and well-being of those in need.
