‘Today’ Show Host Shares Cancer Battle Update Post Double Mastectomy
Jill Martin Opens Up About Her Battle with Breast Cancer
“Today” show contributor Jill Martin has bravely shared her journey of battling breast cancer and her ongoing recovery after undergoing a double mastectomy. Just weeks after being diagnosed in mid-July, Martin underwent surgery to remove an aggressive tumor and 18 lymph nodes, one of which was cancerous.
Martin, a 47-year-old lifestyle contributor on the morning show, revealed that physically she is doing “okay” after the surgery. However, emotionally, she has been on a “roller coaster” and describes the last six weeks as “earth-shattering.”
In a personal essay, Martin expressed her gratitude to her surgeon, Dr. Elisa Port, and shared the intense moment of waking up from the four-hour surgery to learn the results of the biopsy. While the cancerous cells were removed, there is always a small possibility of recurrence. Martin is now focused on planning her long road ahead and taking necessary precautions to prevent the disease from returning.

Martin also expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support she has received since sharing her diagnosis. She emphasized the importance of genetic testing, as her breast cancer was not detected through annual checkups but rather through testing positive for the BRCA2 gene. Many individuals reached out to Martin, sharing their own stories and expressing their intentions to get tested.
Watching her family witness her battle with cancer has been the hardest part for Martin. She acknowledged the impact it has had on her household and described the past three weeks as feeling like a lifetime.
This week, Martin will meet with her doctor to discuss the next steps in her journey. She already knows that she will undergo a full hysterectomy to decrease the risk of ovarian cancer and will need to take anti-hormonal drugs for five years. Additionally, due to the aggressiveness of the tumor, chemotherapy is likely in her future, which has been the most challenging aspect for her to accept.
Despite the shock and the emotional toll, Martin is choosing to fight. Cancer may have knocked her down, but she is determined to rise above it. Each day is a choice, and even though there are moments when she feels like staying under the covers and crying, she is gradually finding the strength to get up and continue the fight.
