Hours after the GOP conference nominated House Majority Whip Tom Emmer as the speaker designate, he made a surprising announcement – he was withdrawing from the race.
Emmer (R-Minn.) decided to pull out of the race after a significant number of Republicans made it clear that they would not support him on the House floor. It became evident that he would not receive the necessary 217 votes to secure victory.
This decision comes in the wake of former President Donald Trump’s statement on Truth Social, where he labeled Emmer as a “RINO” and warned against voting for him, stating that it would be a “tragic mistake.”
Emmer now joins the ranks of the third GOP Speaker nominee to be unsuccessful in their bid. Last week, Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) failed to secure the gavel after three unsuccessful attempts. Additionally, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) withdrew from the running due to insufficient support within the conference.
With Emmer’s withdrawal, the GOP will have to regroup and restart their search for a replacement for ousted former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).
