Tony Gonzales amplifies call for DOGE to investigate DHS to stop ‘border crisis’

Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) called for the Department of Government Efficiency to properly look into the Department of Homeland Security, as doing so would ensure all of its money is going toward securing the nation’s border.

Former acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf posted a thread on X about some of the wasteful ventures that took place at the agency, including financing billboards promoting services for illegal immigrants and a grant of at least $40,000 given to the U.S. E-Sports Association “under the guise of preventing terrorism.” Gonzales, a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, expressed thanks to DOGE and its head, Elon Musk, for holding the government “accountable” and called for “everyone” to explain to DOGE how they use taxpayer dollars.

“And we have to make sure that they’re not going towards these NGOs that are helping fuel this border crisis,” Gonzales said on Fox News’s America’s Newsroom. “That they’re not going toward organizations that are going against us, if we will. We need to get the IRS to stop auditing Americans and audit itself for a change and figure things out.”

Regarding border security, Gonzales contended that Trump is off to “a great start” in ending the border crisis but that it would take “years” to undo the effects of the open border under former President Joe Biden‘s leadership. As such, Gonzales stressed that the government can’t shut down right after Trump’s inauguration and that Congress needs to fund the government’s budget properly.

Congress’s continuing resolution is currently set to expire on March 14, ahead of which Gonzales warned against doing another year of continuing resolution. Instead, a “conservative budget” must be passed that also provides the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement the necessary funds to continue its work on deportations.

Border czar Tom Homan recently pitched the possibility of deputizing Internal Revenue Service agents to aid ICE in its deportations of illegal immigrants, which Gonzales argued is a “great” idea to deliver “a clear message” to the world that the border is secure.

Homan has rebuffed Pope Francis over his recent criticism of the Trump administration’s work on deportation, telling the pope that he ought to “fix the Catholic Church” and “leave border enforcement to us.”
