Disney’s top diversity officer departs.

Disney’s Top Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer to Depart Amid Controversy

In a memo obtained by Variety, it has been revealed that Disney’s chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) officer, Latondra Newton, will be leaving the entertainment giant to “pursue other endeavors.” This news comes as Disney faces criticism from conservative customers over its promotion of LGBT themes and ongoing battles with Florida Republicans.

“I’m writing to share the news that Latondra Newton has decided to leave The Walt Disney Company to pursue other endeavors,” the internal memo obtained by Variety read. “Working alongside all of you and so many others, she has inspired countless cast members and employees to bring about lasting change and to help create a world where we can all feel safe and we all belong.”

After six years at Disney, Newton will reportedly be joining the board of a different corporation. In the meantime, Julie Merges, a current human resources executive at the company, will serve as the interim top DEI officer while a hiring search is conducted.

Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

During her time at Disney, Newton worked to build on the company’s commitment to producing entertainment that reflects a global audience and fosters a welcoming and inclusive workplace for everyone. She played a key role in initiatives such as the “Reimagine Tomorrow” program, which focused on representation for various groups, including gender diversity, Black representation, female empowerment, diverse families, LGBTQIA+ representation, and Middle Eastern representation.

Newton also signed a letter from top Disney executives addressing racial disparities and vowing to pursue real change following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Controversies and Backlash

Disney has faced criticism from some customers for incorporating LGBT themes into children’s content, including a gay kiss in the 2022 film “Lightyear,” which performed poorly at the box office. The company has also voiced opposition to a Florida law aimed at protecting children from being taught gender ideology and sexual topics in the classroom.

Additionally, Disney received backlash online after a video surfaced of a man in a dress welcoming children into a Disneyland boutique filled with princess costumes.

Disclosure: The Daily Wire has announced plans for kids entertainment content.
