Top House Democrat Says Party Infighting Doesn’t Mean They Need New Leadership

Democratic infighting doesn’t mean the party needs new leadership, according to a top House Democrat.

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) the House Democratic Caucus’s chairman, said there’s no need to look for new leadership in the party, even if Democrats are facing an uphill battle in this year’s midterm elections.

“I think being led by Speaker Pelosi and Leader Schumer, we’ve been acting decisively,” Jeffries told CBS’s Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan on Sunday. “Just this week, we responded by passing legislation to address the price gouging that we believe, as it relates to the oil and gas industry, is taking place.”

“We of course passed legislation to deal with the rise in domestic terrorism and white supremacy,” Jeffries continued.

Brennan pushed back, asking Jeffries whether that law, which most Republicans in the House voted against, was needed.

Jeffries said Democrats are acting “decisively,” but they need to “crystallize the differences between what we’re about and what republicans are all about.”

Despite the activity from Democrats, their voters haven’t been pleased with the results they’re seeing.

Brennan asked Jeffries what Democrats can do to hold on to a majority in Congress when 52% of Democrats say that the condition of the national economy is bad.

“I’m very confident that we will be able to hold on to the majority,” Jeffries said. “President Biden has done a very good job under incredibly difficult circumstances.”

The congressman said he knows voters are “unsettled” as a result of “COVID fatigue, inflationary pressures, high gas prices, a war in Ukraine, a radical extreme Republican Party that doesn’t appear to believe in democracy any longer.”

Jeffries touted Biden’s American Rescue Plan, a $1.9 trillion spending bill that the San Francisco Federal Reserve found directly resulted in a 3% spike in inflation, as one of the “decisive” actions that will help Democrats keep their majority.

Democratic leadership is polling poorly, as President Joe Biden faces a 52% unfavorable rating, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has a 57.6% unfavorable rating, and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has a 46.5% unfavorable rating, according to RealClearPolitics averages.
