Caban’s twin brother is reportedly under FBI scrutiny for alleged corruption linked to his brother’s influential position. During a press conference, Mayor Adams affirmed his support for Caban, although he acknowledged uncertainty about Caban’s future as commissioner amid ongoing investigations into Adams’ inner circle.

New York City Police Department Commissioner Edward Caban will reportedly step down from his position after his home was raided by the FBI last week.
A 33-year veteran of the NYPD, Caban was named its commissioner by New York City Mayor Eric Adams last year. Caban’s anticipated resignation comes after FBI agents searched his home and subpoenaed his cellphone last Wednesday, Politico reported.
At least six other NYPD officials connected to Adams also had their homes raided and phones confiscated.
Caban insisted in comments to CBS on Monday afternoon that the rumors he would resign his post were “false.” His words came as he was expected to meet with NYPD leadership to discuss his resignation.
James Caban, the NYPD commissioner’s twin brother, had his phones seized as well and is under FBI scrutiny for allegedly influence peddling and using his sibling’s powerful role to gain favors, according to a report from the New York Post.
Adams stood by the commissioner during a press conference Monday, saying, “There was nothing that came from me that fed those rumors at all.” However, he responded, “I don’t think anything in life is guaranteed” when pressed on whether Edward Caban would remain the NYPD’s top official.
Edward Caban is one of many in Adam’s inner circle who have been scrutinized by the FBI over the past 10 months, though the agency’s investigation into the NYPD appears to be separate from its investigation into Adam’s alleged ties to Turkey.
An FBI investigation into whether Adam’s 2021 mayoral campaign had worked with the Turkish government to funnel foreign money into its coffers became public in November 2023. At the time, federal agents raided Brianna Suggs’s and Rana Abbasova’s homes, both of whom were close to Adams and were affiliated with his mayoral campaign.
Politicians across the aisle have suggested that the FBI’s investigation into Adams and his associates is politically motivated and stems from the Biden administration’s public feud with the New York Democrat.
Adams has held harsh criticism for President Joe Biden’s immigration policies and their impact on the Big Apple. There is little direct evidence, however, that the FBI’s investigation into the mayor is a “witch hunt,” as Democratic state Sen. Leroy Comrie called it last year.
