Top Republicans Slam Department of Justice Over Appointment of Special Counsel in Hunter Biden Investigation
Top Republicans have strongly criticized the Department of Justice (DOJ) after it was revealed that the federal prosecutor who offered Hunter Biden a “sweetheart” plea deal has been named as a special counsel in the ongoing investigation into him.
Attorney General Merrick Garland made the announcement on Friday, granting U.S. Attorney for Delaware David Weiss full authority to conduct the Hunter Biden investigation as he deems necessary.
Weiss had previously offered Hunter Biden a plea deal for tax and gun possession crimes, but it fell apart at the last minute when a judge refused to approve it. The deal did not involve any jail time for Biden.
Republicans Express Outrage
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy took to X, formerly Twitter, to express his concerns about Garland’s decision. He stated, “This action by Biden’s DOJ cannot be used to obstruct congressional investigations or whitewash the Biden family corruption. If Weiss negotiated the sweetheart deal that couldn’t get approved, how can he be trusted as a Special Counsel?” McCarthy vowed that House Republicans will continue to seek the truth for the American people.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise also criticized Weiss’ appointment, calling it “outrageous.” He tweeted, “Don’t be fooled. Garland appointing Weiss as a sham special counsel on Hunter is a way to block info from Congress while claiming they’re investigating. Weiss approved the sweetheart plea deal. This is an even better deal for Hunter since charges may never come.”

Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina also weighed in, stating, “A year too late,” in response to an Associated Press report about Weiss’ appointment.

Republican Rep. Andrew Clyde of Georgia criticized Weiss, saying, “Weiss – who orchestrated Hunter’s sweetheart plea deal – has ZERO credibility.” He further claimed that the appointment is an attempt to conceal the alleged corruption of the Biden family.

Other Republicans, including Reps. Jim Jordan, Lauren Boebert, and James Comer, also criticized the DOJ over Weiss’ appointment. Comer is leading the congressional investigation into alleged Biden family corruption.
