Beer brand Bud Light Faces Steep Decline in Sales

According to new data, beer brand Bud Light experienced a significant drop in weekly sales revenue, plunging 26.8% in the week ending June 10. This decline marks a new low for the popular brand.

Continued Financial Struggles

The data, provided by Bump Williams Consulting and NielsenIQ, reveals that Bud Light’s financial struggles have persisted into June. The brand has faced opposition from customers due to its controversial April partnership with transgender-identifying activist Dylan Mulvaney.

Bump Williams, a representative from the consulting firm, acknowledged the challenges faced by Bud Light and other beer brands, stating, “This was a tough week for Bud Light and other beer brands.” The overall beer sales for the week ending June 10 also declined, including Budweiser (10%), Natural Light (2.3%), and Michelob Ultra (2.4%).

Competition from Modelo Especial

While Bud Light has remained the top-selling beer overall for the year, it has recently been displaced by Modelo Especial as the leading beer for the month of May. The staying power of Modelo Especial as the nation’s favorite beer is yet to be determined, according to Bump Williams.

Modelo Especial, a Mexican beer, is owned by Constellation Brands in North America, while Anheuser-Busch owns it outside of the region.

Market Value Loss

Bud Light’s partnership with Dylan Mulvaney has had a significant impact on its market value. The brand has lost an astonishing $15.7 billion in market value, according to recent analysis.

Anheuser-Busch CEO Brendan Whitworth acknowledged the backlash the company is facing, stating, “We recognize that over the last two months, the discussion surrounding our company and Bud Light has moved away from beer, and this has impacted our consumers, our business partners, and our employees.”

Despite the challenges, Whitworth expressed optimism for the future, mentioning the upcoming summer advertising campaign that will focus on Bud Light’s beloved qualities. He emphasized the brand’s commitment to brewing great beer and earning its place in moments that matter to consumers.
