Trader Joe’s Announces Recall of Gourmet Black Bean Tamales
Trader Joe’s has recently issued a recall for Texas Tamale Company’s Gourmet Black Bean Tamales due to the potential presence of an undeclared milk allergen. This marks the sixth food recall the California-based chain has announced in just five weeks.
According to Trader Joe’s, they were informed by the supplier, Texas Tamale Company, on August 23rd that the products may contain undeclared milk.

The Houston-based Texas Tamale Company stated in their announcement on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website that individuals with a milk allergy or sensitivity could experience serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products.
The company explained that some milk-containing products, specifically Hatch Green Chile and Cheese Tamales, were mistakenly packaged in Gourmet Black Bean Tamales bags. Instead of black beans, the affected products will contain white cheese and hatch green chiles.
The affected products were exclusively sold at Trader Joe’s stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas. A total of 1,632 units were affected.
The products (UPC# 717725000580) have a best before date of 06/19/25 and a Lot code 17023 printed on the packaging. Customers who purchased these products are strongly encouraged to return them for a full refund.
The company assured that no instances of illness have been reported so far, as the potentially affected products have been promptly removed from sale.
The recall was initiated following a consumer complaint, which revealed that the products were distributed in packaging that failed to disclose the presence of milk.
Texas Tamale Company acknowledged a temporary lapse in their packaging processes as the source of the issue and expressed regret for any inconvenience or concern caused.
For any questions, individuals can contact Texas Tamale Company at 1-800-T-TAMALE, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (CST). They can also reach out to Trader Joe’s Customer Relations at (626) 599-3817, Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. PT, or send a message through the online portal.
In addition to this recall, Trader Joe’s has recently announced five other recalls starting from July 25th. These include:
- Multigrain crackers, which may contain metal
- Cooked falafel, which “may contain rocks”
- Broccoli cheddar soup, which “may contain insects”
- Two almond cookie products, which also “may contain rocks”
A Trader Joe’s spokesperson has stated that the timing of these recalls being so close is purely coincidental.
Trader Joe’s, privately held by the families that also own Aldi Nord, a German grocer, had previously issued a recall in March for a frozen fruit product due to possible hepatitis A contamination.
