Trans golfer wins women’s tournament, moves closer to LPGA qualifier spot
A Trans-Identifying Golfer Makes History at Women’s Tournament
In a groundbreaking moment, a 30-year-old man who identifies as a woman has emerged victorious in a women’s golf tournament in Florida, bringing him one step closer to qualifying for the LPGA tour.
Hailey Davidson, a former member of a men’s college golf team, triumphed at the NXXT Women’s Classic held at the Mission Inn Resort and Club in Florida, as reported by The New York Post. Despite being three shots behind the leader in the final two holes, Davidson forced a playoff and ultimately secured the victory after two extra holes.
Expressing her surprise and joy, Davidson shared on Instagram, “Honestly, this one came as a bit of a surprise to me. Being 3 shots back with two holes to play, I got myself into a playoff after sticking it to 3 feet on the 18th hole. We tied the first playoff hole with birdies, and then a Par on the second earned me my first win in 2.5 years!”
Reflecting on her journey, Davidson added, “I had come so close lately with a playoff loss 3 starts ago to then finishing one back last week, but this is why you never give up no matter where you think you are at in a tournament! It’s never over until that last putt goes in on 18, so push till the end!”
Leading the Way and Eyeing the LPGA Tour
With this tournament win, Davidson now sits atop the season’s leaderboard. The top five players at the end of the season earn exemptions to participate in the Epson Tour, the official developmental tour of the LPGA Tour. Additionally, Davidson received a prize of $1,576.51 for winning the NXXT Women’s Classic, bringing her total winnings for the season to $4,206.84. She also holds the lead in the NXXT Women’s Tour for total Eagles with three and total Birdies with 50.
The NXXT Women’s Tour is dedicated to championing the talents of women golfers.
Davidson, who underwent gender surgery in 2021 after years of hormone treatments, is making history in a sport that has evolved its policies. In 2010, LPGA players voted to remove the requirement that golfers be “female at birth” to join the tour, following a lawsuit by a transgender individual arguing that the rule violated California civil rights law, as reported by The New York Times.

According to the LPGA’s ”Gender Policy,” individuals who have undergone gender reassignment from male to female after puberty are eligible for membership and participation in tournaments.
How do organizations like the International Olympic Committee and the NCAA address the issue of transgender inclusion in sports, and are their policies effective in maintaining fairness and inclusion
Until it’s over!”
Davidson’s win has sparked both celebration and controversy. Supporters argue that her victory is a testament to inclusivity and equality in sports, as she competes in accordance with her gender identity. They believe that transgender athletes should be allowed to compete in the category that aligns with their gender identity, as long as they meet the eligibility criteria.
On the other hand, critics raise concerns about the potential advantages that trans women may have over cisgender women in certain sports. They argue that physiological differences between the two groups, such as muscle mass and hormone levels, can create an unfair playing field. Some believe that creating separate categories for transgender athletes would be a more equitable solution.
This debate around transgender inclusion in sports is not new, with several high-profile cases drawing attention to the issue in recent years. Organizations like the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the NCAA have implemented policies that allow transgender athletes to compete in their self-identified gender categories, but with eligibility requirements, such as hormone therapy and specified time frames since transitioning. However, the question of whether these policies strike the right balance between fairness and inclusion remains contentious.
While transgender athletes continue to make strides in sports, it is important to consider the perspectives of all stakeholders involved. This includes transgender athletes who deserve to participate in sports that align with their gender identity, as well as cisgender athletes who want to compete on an even playing field. Striking a balance between inclusivity and fairness may require ongoing dialogue and careful examination of existing policies.
Davidson’s victory serves as a reminder that progress is being made toward greater acceptance and recognition of transgender individuals in society. It also highlights the need for continued discussion and exploration of the complexities surrounding transgender inclusion in sports. As more transgender athletes participate and achieve success in their respective fields, the conversation on this topic will likely evolve, ultimately shaping the future of sports and equality.
