Transgender designer criticizes Target for ending partnership.
Target Faces Backlash for Removing LGBTQ-Themed Merchandise
“It’s a very dangerous precedent to set, that if people just get riled up enough about the products that you’re selling, you can completely distance yourself from the LGBT community, when and if it’s convenient.”
Target, a popular U.S. retailer, recently faced criticism for removing some LGBTQ-themed merchandise from its stores. The decision was made after customers complained and incidents of Pride merchandise being thrown on the floor increased. However, the move has been met with backlash from the LGBTQ community and supporters.
The Problem with “Rainbow Capitalism”
Erik Carnell, a transgender designer whose products were pulled from Target’s stores, spoke out against the company’s “rainbow capitalism.” He believes that companies like Target seek to profit from the LGBTQ community during Pride Month but fail to stand by them when challenges arise.
- Critics labeled Carnell’s designs as “Satanic” and falsely claimed they were marketed to children.
- Kohl’s Corp is also facing criticism for selling bibs and bodysuits for babies that feature the Pride flag and slogans supporting the LGBTQ community.
- Target’s collection for Pride Month includes over 2,000 products, but Carnell’s Abprallen brand was the only one removed both in-store and online.
Target CEO Brian Cornell acknowledged the impact of the decision on the LGBTQ community, stating that the company stands with them not just during Pride Month, but every day.
Support for Carnell
Carnell has received hate messages and death threats since the incident, but he has also received support from other companies. Etsy, an online marketplace where Abprallen has a store, checked on him, and Threadless, which prints his designs, offered him its premium services for free.
It’s important for companies to stand by their values and support the communities they seek to profit from. Removing LGBTQ-themed merchandise sends a dangerous message and sets a harmful precedent.
