Lawsuit filed by parents after transgender teacher announces transition to Wisconsin students.
A Wisconsin Mother Sues School District for Withholding Document on Teacher’s Gender Transition
A Wisconsin mother has taken legal action against her local school district for refusing to provide her with a copy of a document that disclosed a teacher’s gender transition to students. The incident has sparked controversy and raised concerns about transparency and parental involvement.
Violation of Public Records Law
In a lawsuit filed in Wisconsin state court, Lea Buchman accused the Eau Claire Area School District of violating public records law by denying her request for a prepared statement that was read to students at multiple district schools. The statement provided details about the gender transition of an orchestra teacher.
Revealing Conversation with Students
According to the lawsuit, orchestra students at Northstar Middle School were required to attend a session with their orchestra teacher, Jacob Puccio, and the school district’s diversity, equity, and inclusion director, Dang Yang. During this session, Puccio and Yang informed the students that the orchestra teacher now identified as a woman and should be addressed as ”Ms. Puccio.”
The lawsuit alleges that Puccio shared personal experiences, including childhood trauma and the decision to undergo a medical procedure related to the transition. Following this meeting, a script detailing Puccio’s transition was reportedly read at various schools in the district, including one attended by Buchman’s child, without prior notice to parents.
Seeking Transparency and Accountability
Since learning about the document, Buchman has made repeated requests to obtain it through a public records request. However, the school district has consistently refused to provide it. Buchman emphasizes that she simply wants to understand what was shared with her children and their peers in the classroom.
Cory Brewer, an associate counsel at the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty, expressed disbelief at the district’s refusal to comply with Buchman’s request, calling it “ridiculous.” Brewer argues that parents have the right to access information that was shared with their children.
Investigation Underway
The Eau Claire Area School District has acknowledged receiving inquiries from concerned parents and has initiated an investigation to determine if any policy violations occurred during the June 5 incident. The district spokesperson stated that the investigation is ongoing, but there have been challenges due to the availability of witnesses and employees during the summer season.
As this legal battle unfolds, it raises important questions about parental involvement, transparency, and the rights of students and their families to be informed about significant events within the school community.
