Tropical Storm Elsa has strengthened to hurricane status as it has continued to move north through the Caribbean. Hurricane Elsa picked up strength over the Atlantic early on Friday as meteorologists estimated it will make landfall in the Southeast U.S. sometime next week.

So far, hurricane warnings have been issued in Barbados, St. Vincent and Jamaica with officials estimating sustained winds of 74 mph and gusts of 84 mph.

Researchers said Elsa is the farthest east a hurricane has formed this early in the year since 1933. This comes amid a year of unusual weather events.
