Tropical Storm Philippe causes flash floods in Eastern Caribbean.
Tropical Storm Philippe Threatens Leeward Islands with Strong Winds and Heavy Rain
Tropical Storm Philippe is making its way northwest across the Caribbean, according to the U.S.-based National Hurricane Center. The storm is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain to Anguilla and other islands in the Leeward Islands.
Currently located about 70 miles northwest of Anguilla, Philippe is moving at a speed of 10 mph and has maximum sustained winds of 45 mph.
While Antigua has lifted its storm warning, the island is urging residents of its sister island, Barbuda, to remain cautious. Shelters are still open for those who had to evacuate due to flooding and stranded vehicles caused by the storm.
The storm has caused significant damage, including flooding in homes and a major fire at the Yacht Club Marina in English Harbour. Firefighters are working to suppress the fire, which has been worsened by strong gusts. Guadeloupe has also experienced heavy rains and flooding, leading to extended school closures and interruptions to water supplies.
Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries, but around 2,500 households are still without power. The National Hurricane Center has issued tropical storm alerts for Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands, and advised residents of the northern Leeward Islands, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico to closely monitor the storm’s progress.
Philippe is expected to bring up to 12 inches of rainfall, potentially causing scattered flash flooding from Anguilla to Montserrat.
