‘Truly A Horrific Event’: Six Kids As Young As One Mowed Down, Two Dead In Hit-And-Run

Six children were mowed down in what authorities are calling a hit-and-run; two were pronounced dead at the scene and four others were transported to a nearby hospital.

The incident took place in daylight, Monday afternoon, in Wilton Manors, a city in Broward County, Florida.

Authorities are asking the public for any additional information into the hit-and-run and traffic homicide detectives have already been called to investigate.

“Officials said four other children were taken to Broward Health Medical Center, one of whom was listed in critical condition,” Local10 News reported. “First responders said those hospitalized were ages 1, 2, 6 and 9.”

“This is a heartbreaking evening for everyone, for families and for the first responders who responded to the scene,” Broward Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Miranda Grossman said in a statement.

“It’s just a horrible situation for the community, for the parents, for anyone who is involved,” the spokeswoman added.

Grossman also confirmed that “BSO Traffic Homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash,” the report noted. “A description of the driver and vehicle were not immediately known.”

Miami Herald reporter Omar Rodríguez Ortiz, who was on the scene following the incident, reported on a press conference from Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Stephen Gollan.

Gollan confirmed “two minors were killed on scene and four others were hurt,” Ortiz reported.

“This is truly a horrific event, and especially so close to the holidays. I can’t imagine what these families are going through,” the chief said. “There were good samaritans that stopped and rendered aid before crews could get on scene. They were able to help triage the patients and begin that first aid process before we could get the patients transported to [the hospital].”
