Trump admits to errors made in first term.
President Trump Reflects on His First Term
In a recent interview with Fox News’ Mario Bartiromo, President Donald Trump opened up about his first term in office, acknowledging that he made mistakes along the way. He attributed most of these issues to the people he chose to fill various roles in his administration.
Acknowledging Mistakes
When asked if there was anything he would do differently this time around, President Trump responded, ”The mistake would be people. I mean, I wouldn’t have put a guy like Bill Barr in—he was weak and pathetic.” He also mentioned his regret in appointing Jeff Sessions as attorney general, as they clashed during their time together.
President Trump further explained, “There are some people that I wouldn’t have put in. You know, most people were good. But I had some people—we had [former Secretary of Defense Mark] Esper. I didn’t like him. He was incompetent. I thought we had other people I didn’t like.”
When questioned about why he appointed these individuals in the first place, President Trump responded, “Because every president, you put somebody in, you think they’re good. But one thing that has happened and I find it very interesting, and this is the way life goes, I put people in—I was there 17 times in Washington, D.C. my whole life. I never stayed overnight. The press actually reported 70 I don’t know if it’s right, but it’s probably pretty right.”
President Trump admitted that he didn’t know what to expect when he became President, as he was unfamiliar with the people in Washington, D.C. However, he confidently stated, “I know the people now better than anybody has ever known the people. I know the good ones, the bad ones, the dumb ones, the smart ones.”
Did He ‘Drain the Swamp’?
Another topic discussed in the interview was whether President Trump had fulfilled his promise to “drain the swamp.” This phrase referred to his campaign pledge to root out D.C. bureaucrats and entrenched establishment figures in the capital city.
Mario Bartiromo challenged him, saying, “You didn’t drain the swamp like you said you would, you didn’t drain the swamp.” This criticism has been commonly directed at the former president by conservative individuals.
