An accomplished Republican professional, who previously served as the⁢ chief operating ⁣officer of⁤ the Commodity Futures Trading Commission ‌(CFTC)⁤ during the Donald Trump administration, was among the victims of a brutal carjacking​ spree in Washington, D.C. The incident occurred ​on Monday‍ night and​ ended with the perpetrator being killed by the police in Maryland early Tuesday morning.

Mike⁣ Gill, currently in‌ critical condition, was shot while picking up his wife,⁣ an education lawyer, just blocks⁤ away from​ the White House on K‍ Street in downtown D.C.‌ at 5:45pm.

“We can ​confirm‌ that Mike Gill was the victim of the shooting at the 900 block ‌of K Street‍ Northwest on Monday⁢ evening and is in critical condition. Out of respect ⁢for the family, ⁢we have nothing​ additional to ‍add at this⁤ time,”

After shooting Gill, the same⁢ man is believed to have carried⁣ out at least two carjackings and⁢ one attempted carjacking. Unfortunately,⁣ one⁢ of the ‌victims has died, according to The Washington Post.

The police reported ​that the perpetrator entered the parked ⁤vehicle, shot the victim, and then fled ​on foot. Gill, the victim, collapsed ⁤outside the vehicle. His wife,⁣ who‌ had been called by Gill moments before‌ the incident, rushed to the scene and ⁤exclaimed, “Oh my God,⁢ that’s my husband.”

According ‌to witness⁣ Yolanda Douglas, Gill’s wife ran towards him and held his hand, desperately ‌asking, “What happened?” Unfortunately, Gill was unable to respond.

Douglas described the scene, stating that ⁣Gill​ was sprawled ⁣on the pavement, dressed in a⁢ shirt and sweater, with one foot still inside the car. Blood pooled⁢ around‍ his head, and his right hand twitched as he lay there.

Approximately​ an hour‍ later, the ‌suspect attempted to carjack another vehicle on Third Street NE but was unsuccessful. He then fatally shot someone else on the street ⁤and stole that person’s car.

Police ⁣revealed that someone on⁤ K Street knew the perpetrator and assisted in identifying him. The stolen car was later found in Prince George’s ⁢County, Maryland. ‌The suspect then carjacked a Toyota, ordered a rideshare, and subsequently carjacked that vehicle as well.

Around⁢ 2:30am, the carjacker, ⁣believed to be⁤ the same⁣ person, fired shots ⁣at ​a Maryland State Police cruiser while driving on D.C. 295. The ⁢Nissan⁤ used in the‍ incident⁤ was later discovered abandoned in Prince George’s County. During the investigation of‍ the abandoned car, a man approached the ​officers with a firearm and ⁢was subsequently killed by the police.

A Record of Accomplishments and Compassion

In 2016, Gill was appointed by the‌ District⁣ of Columbia to be the Republican representative on the city’s Board of Elections. He served three ​terms until July 2020. Gill’s impressive political career includes⁢ being ⁤the chief operating officer of ​the CFTC from January 2017 to July 2019. He also held positions as the chief of staff to former‍ CFTC Chairman Christopher ⁤Giancarlo and as the Chief Regulatory Reform Officer responsible for an agency-wide review of ⁤regulations.

He previously served‍ as the executive director of the Ripon Education Fund, ​a nonpartisan nonprofit organization promoting cooperation ​between the U.S. and Europe.⁤ Gill played a significant ​role in shaping how Fannie ‍Mae ⁢and Freddie​ Mac handle mortgages. The DC⁤ Council highlighted‍ his achievements ‍during his tenure at the⁤ CFTC, including the agency’s first-ever Collective Bargaining Agreement with its union, the implementation of⁢ a new pay and⁢ performance‍ system to address pay inequities, and the establishment of a diversity-focused internship program.

Gill ​currently holds the position of vice⁤ president at the Housing ⁤Policy Council.
