Trump Allies Voice Support for Former President After Indictment
Former President Donald Trump has called the recent decision to indict him on unspecified criminal charges by a New York grand jury “political persecution and election interference at the highest level in history.” The indictment has sparked both outrage and support from Republicans, including Trump’s 2024 GOP presidential primary rival Vivek Ramaswamy and potential rival Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Trump’s lawyer, Joseph Tacopina, confirmed that the former President will surrender himself to Manhattan if indicted.
DeSantis stated in a recent announcement that if requested, his state would not cooperate with authorities. “The weaponization of the legal system to advance a political agenda turns the rule of law on its head,” DeSantis said. “It is un-American. The Soros-backed Manhattan District Attorney has consistently bent the law to downgrade felonies and to excuse criminal misconduct. Yet, now he is stretching the law to target a political opponent.”
Most Republicans who released statements about Trump’s indictment have shared the belief that it represents political persecution. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) recently said, “It’s a sad state of affairs when socialist DAs would rather pursue a politically motivated witch hunt against President Donald Trump than crack down on violent crime. The American people won’t forget.”
Former Trump senior adviser and attorney Jenna Ellis described the indictment as “a legal disaster and weaponizing the justice system against a political opponent.” She added that “The only reason DA Alvin Bragg is bringing charges is that Trump is running for the GOP 2024 presidential nomination…the precedent this sets threatens to further divide a country that already seems to be on the verge of tearing itself apart.”
As this highly controversial issue progresses, supporters of Trump are standing behind him, stating that the American people should decide who governs and not politically ambitious prosecutors.
