President Donald Trump announced a $500 billion artificial intelligence (AI) investment plan working with three tech companies to build the infrastructure needed to beat China and even help cure cancer.

Trump made the announcement for the plan, called Stargate, in the Roosevelt Room of the White House flanked by Oracle Chief Technology Officer Larry Ellison, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, who will join forces to build data centers and other infrastructure necessary for a competitive industry.

The first project is set to be built in Texas, and Trump said Stargate would create over 100,000 jobs.

“One of the most exciting things we’re working on, using the tools that Sam and Masa [Masayoshi] are providing, is a cancer vaccine. Using AI you can do early cancer detection with a blood test and once we gene sequence that cancer tumor, you can then vaccinate the person, design a vaccine for every individual person to vaccinate them against that cancer,” Ellison said during the press conference. “You can make that mRNA vaccine robotically using AI in about 48 hours. So imagine early cancer detection, the development of a cancer vaccine for your particular cancer aimed at you, and have that vaccine available in 48 hours. This is the promise of AI and the promise of the future.”

Curing cancer was a promise former President Joe Biden made during the 2020 campaign and while in office, but little-to-no progress was made. In fact, Biden backed efforts to make medical innovation more difficult.

Trump called the initiative the “greatest AI infrastructure project by far in history,” adding, “It will ensure the future of technology. What we want to do, we want to keep it in this country — China’s a competitor, others are a competitor.”

The three companies will put up $100 billion each initially into Stargate, with the goal of meeting $500 billion over four years. Eventually, the project will also open to outside investors as well.

When asked by Trump what he thought the project could do for healthcare, Altman said new technologies could allow diseases to be cured at a much more rapid rate, saying it will be “among the most important things this technology does.”

On his first day in office, Trump repealed an executive order signed by Biden that restricted AI, though when asked by a reporter Tuesday about another Biden order opening up federal lands for building data centers, Trump said he is unlikely to repeal it.

“No, I wouldn’t do that. That sounds to me like it’s something that I would like,” he said. “I’d like to see federal lands opened up for data centers. I think they’re going to be very important.”
