Trump appoints former college football player Bo Hines to ‘crypto council’

President-elect Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Bo Hines, a former college football player who twice ran for a North Carolina House seat, will be the executive director of his newly created Presidential Council of Advisers for Digital Assets, or “crypto council.”

Trump announced the selection in a statement posted on Truth Social.

“Bo Hines will be the Executive Director of the Presidential Council of Advisers for Digital Assets (the ‘Crypto Council’), a new advisory group composed of luminaries from the Crypto industry, and chaired by our Crypto Czar, David Sacks. Bo is a graduate of Yale University, and Wake Forest University Law School,” he said.

In the role, Hines will “work with David [Sacks] to foster innovation and growth in the digital assets space, while ensuring industry leaders have the resources they need to succeed.”

In a nod to the attention crypto will get in Trump’s second administration set to take office in January, the statement added that Hines and Sacks will “create an environment where this [crypto] industry can flourish, and remain a cornerstone of our Nation’s technological advancement.”

Trump selected venture capitalist David Sacks as his “crypto czar” earlier this month.

Hines, 29 and a North Carolina native, ran for North Carolina’s 13th Congressional District in 2022, winning the Republican primary before losing to Democratic candidate Wiley Nickel in the general election by just over 3 percentage points. He followed that up with a run in 2024 for North Carolina’s 6th Congressional District but lost in the Republican primary.

Hines received Trump’s endorsement in 2022 but was snubbed for now-Rep.-elect Addison McDowell in 2024.

Before his political campaigns, he played college football for North Carolina State University as a wide receiver, before transferring to Yale University, where he briefly continued his football career.

In an X post addressing the appointment, Hines said “it will be the honor of a lifetime to serve in your next administration,” adding, “I am thrilled to work alongside the brilliant [David Sacks] to ensure that this industry will thrive and remain a cornerstone of our Nation’s technological advancement.”

Trump also announced a flurry of picks for the team who will work with Sacks, including Michael J.K. Kratsios as director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Dr. Lynne Parker as executive director of the Presidential Council of Advisors for Science and Technology, and Sriram Krishnan as senior policy adviser for artificial intelligence at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
