Trump blasts agencies leading investigation into second assassination attempt- Washington Examiner
Former President Donald Trump has criticized the FBI and the Department of Justice (DOJ) for allegedly mishandling the investigation into a second assassination attempt against him. Trump claims that the agencies’ ongoing investigations into his conduct have created a conflict of interest, making their findings unreliable. He expressed these concerns following an incident where an alleged would-be assassin, Ryan Routh, was arrested after attempting to shoot Trump at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. Routh is charged with possession of a firearm as a convicted felon and with a firearm with an obliterated serial number. In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump emphasized his belief that the penalties facing Routh are insufficient, and he has called for Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis, to take over the investigation, asserting that the federal agencies are unable to conduct an unbiased inquiry due to their preoccupation with targeting him.
Trump blasts FBI and DOJ for ‘downplaying’ investigation into second assassination attempt: ‘Conflict of interest’
Former President Donald Trump claimed the federal agencies leading the inquiry into the latest attempt on his life are “mishandling” their investigation.
Trump alleged that the FBI and Department of Justice’s actions to go after him “nonstop with weaponized law affairs” prevented them from conducting an unbiased investigation. He called for the state of Florida to take over the investigation in a statement Thursday.
“The Kamala Harris/Joe Biden Department of Justice and FBI are mishandling and downplaying the second assassination attempt on my life since July,” Trump said in a statement posted to Truth Social. “The charges brought against the maniac assassin are a slap on the wrist. It’s no wonder since the DOJ and FBI have been coming after me nonstop with Weaponized Lawfare since I announced my first Historic Campaign for the Presidency.”
A judge ruled that alleged would-be assassin Ryan Routh will remain in prison without bail as he awaits his trial during a Florida court hearing Monday. Routh has been charged with two gun crimes: possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
The Secret Service prevented Routh from shooting the former president at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sept. 15. The gunman was spotted hiding in the bushes with a semiautomatic rifle just 400 yards away from Trump.
“This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you. I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster. It is up to you now to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job,” Routh allegedly wrote in a letter released Monday morning.
Trump expressed worry that the federal agencies wouldn’t take the proper measures to hold Routh accountable.
“The DOJ and FBI have a Conflict of Interest since they have been obsessed with ‘Getting Trump’ for so long,” he complained.
The former president argued that the agencies’ past investigations into whether he broke various federal laws were politically motivated and made it “very difficult” for him to trust their investigation into Routh.
The agencies have denied any political motivation in their investigations of the former president.
Trump’s comments about the investigations ranged from “from Russia, Russia, Russia, Ukraine, Ukraine, Ukraine, Iran, Iran, Iran, Impeachment Hoax Number One, Impeachment Hoax Number Two, to the Lawless Documents Hoax brought after an Illegal and unConstitutional Raid of my home, on which I am suing the DOJ for their wrongful acts,” to “January 6th Hoax in Washington, D.C., where the J6 Unselect Committee illegally deleted and destroyed all Documents.”
Trump concluded his statement by calling on Gov. Ron Desantis (R-FL) to take over the investigation.
“If the DOJ and FBI cannot do their job honestly and without bias, and hold the aspiring assassin responsible to the full extent of the Law, Governor Ron DeSantis and the State of Florida have already agreed to take the lead on the investigation and prosecution,” he said. “Florida charges would be much more serious than the ones the FBI has announced.”
Earlier this month, Desantis stressed that he didn’t believe it was in “the best interest” to have federal agencies “seeking to prosecute” the former president to lead this investigation.
“In my judgment, it’s not in the best interest of our state or our nation to have the same federal agencies that are seeking to prosecute Donald Trump leading this investigation, especially when the most serious straightforward offense constitutes a violation of state law but not federal law,” the Florida governor said.
