Trump campaign silent as reports suggest he will skip GOP debate for Tucker Carlson.
Rumors of Trump Interview with Tucker Carlson Circulate Ahead of RNC Debate
Rumors are swirling that former President Donald Trump may opt for an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson instead of attending the Republican National Committee’s first primary debate airing on Wednesday. Trump has hinted that he might skip the debate to avoid giving exposure to low-polling candidates, and it was widely anticipated that he would hold a competing event if he chose not to participate. Carlson, the immensely popular conservative host, now has a show on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
Trump’s Final Decision
According to the New York Times, sources close to the former president have revealed that he has made his final decision and will not be participating in the RNC debate. While Trump has previously expressed reluctance to join the debate, he had reportedly given aides the impression that he might change his mind at the last minute and attend. However, a Wednesday night interview between Trump and Carlson has not been confirmed, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Trump’s Reasons for Skipping the Debate
Trump has argued that he shouldn’t need to debate, citing his significant lead over competitors in the polls. He also believes that his status as a former president should grant him the same consideration as an incumbent president, who typically does not debate primary challengers. Additionally, he has criticized Fox News, the broadcaster of the debate, for its coverage, choice of guests, and unflattering photo choices of him. The Trump campaign, Fox News, and the RNC have not provided any comments to the Washington Examiner.
Competitors’ Response and Biden Campaign’s Reaction
Trump’s 2024 Republican competitors have expressed their hope that he participates in the debate but have indicated that they are prepared regardless of his attendance. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden’s campaign and Trump’s campaign have already engaged in a war of words over the debate. Biden campaign spokesman Kevin Munoz stated, “Of course Donald Trump wants to avoid appearing in Wisconsin because he knows Wisconsin is a state that illustrates his failed leadership.” In response, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung criticized Biden, calling him the “worst president in our country’s history” and accusing him of corruption.
The debate is set to take place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which has become a focal point of the political discussion. Munoz highlighted Trump’s previous loss in the state to Biden in the 2020 presidential election, contrasting it with Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton in 2016.
Biden Campaign’s Focus on Trump-Era Manufacturing Deal
The Biden campaign has been drawing attention to the scaling back of a manufacturing deal with Taiwan electronics manufacturer Foxconn that was initiated during the Trump era. The deal, announced in 2017, promised to bring thousands of jobs and significant investment to Wisconsin. However, it has since been scaled back, resulting in only a fraction of the promised jobs being delivered. This issue has become a point of contention between the two campaigns.
