Trump campaign raises $6.6 million and still growing post-indictment.
Former President Donald Trump Turns Indictment into Fundraising Success
Former President Donald Trump is leveraging his federal indictment to fuel his 2024 presidential campaign, with an impressive $6.6 million already raised in just a few days since the charges were brought against him.
Trump, who made history as the first former president to face a federal indictment, was arraigned in Miami on Tuesday on 37 counts related to mishandling classified information and obstructing a federal investigation. Despite these charges, he is still permitted to campaign for higher office.
Following his arraignment, Trump addressed his supporters at his club in Bedminster, New Jersey, and hosted a closed-door fundraiser that generated $2.1 million in donations, according to his campaign.
In addition to this significant amount, Trump’s reelection effort has received an extra $4.5 million from other donors since news of the indictment broke.
“Since deranged Jack Smith took the unprecedented step of weaponizing the justice system to attack his political opponent, Donald J. Trump for President 2024 has raised more than $6.6 million in just a few short days,” Trump’s campaign said in a statement published Wednesday. “The American people will not stand for this corrupt attempt to interfere in the 2024 election against the leading candidate for President who will demolish the Deep State and finish the job of draining the Swamp.”
The statement also highlights that President Trump consistently leads in national and statewide polls, making him the strongest candidate to defeat Joe Biden in a general election.
Despite the criminal charges, Trump remains the clear frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. This recent surge in fundraising could pose a challenge for his primary rival, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, and other Republican contenders.
Trump’s ability to attract small-dollar donations has been a defining factor since he entered politics in 2015. Republican political operatives believe this could be crucial in thwarting the rise of Governor DeSantis and other competitors, as Trump’s grassroots support remains strong.
