Judge rules Trump cannot delay New York civil trial amidst mounting legal woes.
Former President Donald Trump’s Bid to Delay Trial Rejected by New York Judge
Former President Donald Trump’s attempt to delay a trial that could have significant consequences for his family business, the Trump Organization, was rejected by a New York state judge on Wednesday. The trial, brought by Democratic New York Attorney General Letitia James, alleges bank and insurance fraud.
Trump’s lawyers made a last-minute request on Tuesday evening for Justice Arthur F. Engoron to postpone the start of the trial. However, Engoron dismissed the request on Wednesday afternoon, stating that Trump’s arguments “are completely without merit.”
Busy Season in Court for Trump
The civil trial is scheduled to begin on October 2nd and could mark the beginning of a busy season in court for Trump. In addition to this trial, he is facing four separate criminal cases as he campaigns for the 2024 presidency.
Trump’s filing on Tuesday requested a “brief” delay until three weeks after Engoron rules on the requests for summary judgments from both sides. These judgments seek decisions on various legal questions without the need for a trial. Trump’s attorneys claimed that James disregarded a June appeals court ruling that found some of her claims were based on transactions outside the statute of limitations.
“A trial of this magnitude should not begin in chaos,” Trump’s attorneys argued. “The court and the defendants are entitled to know the claims and issues to be tried sufficiently in advance to prepare adequately for trial.”
James’s office also filed a separate request on Tuesday, asking for legal sanctions against Trump and his two co-defendants, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump. They argued that the defendants’ legal teams made the same “frivolous” argument five times. James has also asked the judge to fine Trump and his sons $10,000 each time their lawyers make additional “frivolous” filings.
James is seeking $250 million in damages for the overall case, while Trump’s attorneys vehemently deny the charges and any wrongdoing on the former president’s part.
Trump Faces Multiple Criminal Trials
In addition to the civil trial, Trump is also facing the prospect of three criminal trials starting in March. These trials involve allegations of attempting to subvert the 2020 election, election interference in a Georgia racketeering case, and falsifying business records in New York to conceal hush money payments before the 2016 election.
When asked about the possibility of withdrawing from the 2024 race if prosecutors offered to drop the charges, Trump stated that he had “absolutely no interest.” He emphasized that he would not make a deal with what he considers to be corrupt individuals.
