President Donald Trump hosted the Florida Panthers, the 2024 Stanley Cup champions, at the White House on Monday, marking the first championship celebration of his second term in office.

Throughout his remarks, the president mentioned a number of similarities between the Panthers’ championship run and his 2024 campaign.

“The Panthers’ 2023 and 2024 season was one for the history books. It was really an exciting one. Everyone was watching it,” Trump said at the White House. “You gave the fans one of the most riveting comebacks in NHL history, any sport history, really. I don’t know anything about a comeback, but they tell me it’s very exciting.”

Trump also found some similarities with the team’s fashion choices.

“I love all these ties. This is so cute,” the president added after noticing that the bulk of the team was wearing his signature red tie. “These people. Look at them. I walked in and said, ‘I think they like Trump.’ I like them.”

Following Trump’s remarks, Panthers winger Matthew Tkachuk presented the president with a gold-plated hockey stick and a jersey, bearing the president’s last name and a ceremonial number 47. The Panthers also brought a framed jersey bearing two numbers — 45 and 47 — meant to symbolize Trump’s split terms in office.

The Panthers defeated the Edmonton Oilers in seven games last summer, blocking a Canadian team from securing the country’s first Stanley Cup in more than 30 years.

And though likely a coincidence, Monday’s championship ceremony occurred as Trump was escalating a pending trade war with America’s neighbor to the north.
