Trump Confidant Worries Former President’s Health May Prevent Run For President In 2024
Donald Trump’s health may not allow him to run for president in 2024, a confidant of the former president says in a new report.
Trump’s diet and age — he would be 78 if he runs again — “could prove to be pivotal factors determining whether he runs in 2024, evangelist Franklin Graham told Axios on HBO.
“The president of Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, and an early supporter to the former president, told the outlet he’s unsure if Trump’s health will permit another campaign. ‘I think for him, everything will depend on his health at that time. If he still has energy and strength like he does. I don’t,’” said Graham, who is 68.
“You know the guy does not eat well, you know, and it’s amazing the energy that he has,” Graham said.
But Graham said the former president’s reported weight loss may help his health. “He’s lost weight, 15 pounds maybe. So he might be in good health and in good shape. I don’t know,” he told Axios.
During his four years in office, Trump was known for his stamina. He was often up past midnight and then regularly posting on Twitter at 6 a.m. But he is also a well-known fan of fast food — he once served food from McDonald’s and other fast food restaurants at a White House ceremony to laud the Clemson football team following its national-championship win.
“I think we’re going to serve McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Burger King with some pizza,” Trump told reporters outside the White House. “I really mean it. It’ll be interesting.”
Two years into his term, Trump was deemed in “excellent” health by his doctor.
“He has incredible cardiac fitness at this point in his life,” said Dr. Ronny Jackson, who conducted the routine physical examination. Jackson said the exam took four hours and included a dozen other medical personnel for a series of tests.
The doctor said Trump’s lifelong abstinence of alcohol and tobacco has led to his excellent health. And Jackson also said Trump, then 71, simply “has incredibly good genes. It’s just the way God made him.”
Jackson said Trump asked to take a cognitive exam during the session. The doctor used “The Montreal Cognitive Assessment,” which screened for Alzheimer’s and dementia, among other illnesses. Trump scored 30 out of 30.
“The cognitive test, it’s well-respected. It’s a test that’s used throughout the United States,” he said. “The fact that the president got 30/30 on that exam, there’s no indication whatsoever that he has any cognitive issues.”
Jackson said he urged Trump to adhere to a healthy diet and increase his exercise — from none currently to at least some. He said he told Trump to cut down carbohydrates and fats. “The president has acknowledged that he’d be healthier if he lost a few pounds.”
All of Trump’s blood tests were normal. His blood pressure was 122/74, a normal level, and he had a resting heart rate of 68 beats per minute. Jackson said Trump takes Crestor, aspirin, Propecia (to prevent male pattern hair loss), and a multivitamin.
