Trump signing executive order ‘ending the war on Christians’

President Donald Trump will sign an executive order Thursday afternoon launching a “Task Force to End the War on Christians” as part of his greater focus on protecting religious freedoms.

The White House plans to send a memo, obtained by the Washington Examiner, to stakeholders Thursday outlining the directives for the new task force, which will be composed of his Cabinet and other senior advisors.

The order itself, which follows the order Trump signed last week aimed at rooting out anti-Semitism on college campuses across the country, directs the task force to conduct a review “of all departments and agencies to identify and eliminate anti-Christian policies, practices, or conduct.”

The task force will convene Christian leaders, alongside state, local, and tribal officials, to recommend new executive and legislative actions for Trump and Congress to take to remedy “any failures to enforce the law against acts of anti-Christian hostility, vandalism, and violence.”

The order does not specifically set a timeline for the task force to deliver those recommendations to Trump.

Trump spoke earlier Thursday morning at both the National Prayer Breakfast on Capitol Hill and a second event at the Capital Hilton, where he suggested Attorney General Pam Bondi would lead a government task force to root out anti-Christian bias in the federal government.

“About time right?” he mused to the crowd.

At the National Prayer Breakfast, Trump vowed to “bring our country back together as one nation under God.

“While I’m in the White House, we will protect Christians in our schools, in our military, in our government, in our workplaces, hospitals, and in our public squares,” the president declared.

Kelly Shackelford, President, CEO, and Chief Counsel to First Liberty Institute, praised Trump’s order in a statement.

“We are thrilled that President Trump recognizes that religious liberty is foundational to all of our Constitutional freedoms and plans to do all he can do to protect our first freedom,” Shackelford wrote. “All Americans should be free to exercise their faith without government intrusion in school, in the military, in the workplace, and in the public square. We are ready to stand with President Trump to ensure that the religious liberty of every American is safe and secure.”
