Trump wants government shutdown, McCarthy tries to prevent it.
Former President Donald Trump Urges Republicans to “Shut It Down” Amid Budget Negotiations
In a fiery post on Truth Social, former President Donald Trump criticized Republicans in Congress as they scramble to negotiate a budget to keep the government running. He called on them to take a bold stance and “shut it down.”
“The Republicans lost big on the Debt Ceiling, got NOTHING, and now they’re worried about being blamed for the Budget Shutdown. Wrong!!! Whoever is President will be blamed, in this case, Crooked (as Hell!) Joe Biden!” he wrote, referring to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s repeated pleas to avert a shutdown.
While President Trump didn’t mention McCarthy by name, he took a swipe at Senate Leader Mitch McConnell, accusing him of giving Democrats everything they want in negotiations, including raising the debt ceiling.
Mr. McConnell has faced public scrutiny after experiencing two health episodes during press conferences, where he froze and couldn’t speak for half a minute. Although a medical doctor cleared him for duty, recent polls indicate that many Americans believe politicians are too old. At 81 years old, McConnell is just a year older than President Joe Biden.
“We need new, real Republican leadership in the United States Senate, not a clone of Mitch, and we need it now!!!” President Trump emphasized.
However, these comments from the 45th president could potentially hinder McCarthy’s efforts to convince House Republicans to avoid a shutdown.
“I’ve never seen anybody win a shutdown,” Mr. McCarthy told reporters after the House proposed a short-term continuing resolution to fund the government for another 31 days while negotiations continue. McCarthy has stated that leaving federal workers unpaid only benefits the Biden administration, urging consensus on the budget.
Contentious issues such as illegal immigration, border security, and funding for Ukraine are still up for discussion.
The short-term continuing resolution proposed by the House Rules Committee recently failed, and Democrats have already started blaming Republicans for a potential shutdown.
President Trump took to social media to push for more aggressive negotiations.
“Our Country is being systematically destroyed by the Radical Left Marxists, Fascists, and Thugs – THE DEMOCRATS. UNLESS YOU GET EVERYTHING, SHUT IT DOWN! Close the Border, stop the Weaponization of ‘Justice,’ and End Election Interference – WE MUST HAVE HONEST ELECTIONS. It’s time Republicans learned how to fight!” he wrote, referring to the multiple indictments against him.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) is currently prosecuting two cases against him: one in Washington for his challenge of the 2020 elections, and one in Florida for alleged mishandling of classified documents after leaving office.
President Trump has previously called on Republicans to “defund” the DOJ, claiming that it is prosecuting him at the behest of his political opponent, President Joe Biden.
In another post, he stated, “A very important deadline is approaching at the end of the month. Republicans in Congress can and must defund all aspects of Crooked Joe Biden’s weaponized Government that refuses to close the Border and treats half the Country as Enemies of the State.”
“This is also the last chance to defund these political prosecutions against me and other Patriots,” he added. President Trump’s indictment in Washington stems from special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into the events of January 6, 2021, and the DOJ has already brought charges against 1,100 individuals present at the U.S. Capitol that day.
According to the latest funding statement, the special counsel’s office would continue to be funded by a “permanent, indefinite appropriation” even in the event of a government shutdown.
In addition to the DOJ cases, President Trump is facing charges in a Georgia racketeering case for challenging the 2020 election results and a case in New York for alleged mishandling of business finances.
He also has several civil petitions against him, including a case brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James, accusing him of inflating his net worth and defrauding insurance companies and banks through the Trump Organization.
In other social media posts on Monday, he expressed that he was “unfairly sued” by Ms. James over false allegations.
“It is a great company that has been slandered and maligned by this politically motivated Witch Hunt,” he wrote. “It is very unfair, and I call for help from the highest Courts in New York State or the Federal System to intercede. This is not America!”
Called for strong action from Republicans during budget negotiations. In his recent post on Truth Social, he criticized Republicans in Congress for their approach and urged them to “shut it down.”
Trump’s main concern seems to be the potential blame that Republicans might face for a budget shutdown. He made it clear that whoever is President at the time will be held responsible, specifically mentioning current President Joe Biden. By emphasizing this point, Trump is highlighting that Republicans should not be fearful of the consequences and should instead take a bold stance.
Although Trump did not mention House Speaker Kevin McCarthy by name, he indirectly criticized him for his repeated pleas to avoid a shutdown. Trump’s criticism extended to Senate Leader Mitch McConnell, accusing him of giving Democrats everything they want in negotiations, including raising the debt ceiling.
One aspect that may have influenced Trump’s comments about McConnell is his recent health episodes during press conferences. While McConnell’s doctor cleared him for duty, polls indicate that many Americans view politicians as too old. This could potentially strengthen Trump’s argument for new Republican leadership in the Senate.
However, Trump’s comments might hinder McCarthy’s efforts to convince House Republicans to avoid a shutdown. McCarthy has expressed his belief that a shutdown does not lead to success and emphasized the importance of reaching a consensus on the budget.
The budget negotiations are dealing with contentious issues such as illegal immigration, border security, and funding for Ukraine. These topics are still up for discussion and will play a significant role in determining the outcome of the budget.
