Trump dumped FEC chairwoman scrubbed from election site – Washington Examiner
Former Federal Election Commission (FEC) Chairwoman Ellen Weintraub has been officially removed from her position after President Donald Trump resolute her removal. Initially resistant to the ouster,Weintraub served for 23 years and had been a vocal critic of Trump and the Republican party during her tenure. Despite her assertions that there was a legitimate process for replacing FEC commissioners, she eventually acknowledged her removal in an email to the commission staff, stating she would come in to clear out her office. Following her exit, her position on the FEC was marked as “vacant.” With her departure, Vice Chairman Trey Trainor will assume leadership, emphasizing collaboration among the remaining commissioners. As the FEC operates with an equal division between Democrats and Republicans,it remains to be seen if Trump will nominate new commissioners to fill the open seats.
Trump dumped FEC chairwoman scrubbed from election site
After initially putting up a fight over her ouster by President Donald Trump, former Federal Election Commission Chairwoman Ellen Weintraub is out, and her place on the list of current commissioners changed to “vacant.”
Despite a flurry of recent news reports that she was still resisting her firing, including one on MSNBC Tuesday, the outspoken Trump critic has given up after serving 23 years on a six-year appointment.
Weintraub fed the initial reports that she was going to challenge Trump. She posted his note to her on X and wrote, “There’s a legal way to replace FEC commissioners — this isn’t it. I’ve been lucky to serve the American people & stir up some good trouble along the way. That’s not changing anytime soon.”
Received a letter from POTUS today purporting to remove me as Commissioner & Chair of @FEC. There’s a legal way to replace FEC commissioners-this isn’t it. Later, she sent an email to commission staff to say that she would leave.
“I received a letter from the president this afternoon, stating that I am ‘removed’ as a member of the FEC, effective immediately. I’ll be coming in tomorrow to clean out my office. If anyone’s around, feel free to stop by,” she wrote.
This week, her slot on the FEC list of current commissioners was erased, and a faceless “vacant” was posted.
A commission spokesman did not elaborate other than to tell Secrets, “at this time, I don’t have any additional information I can provide other than to point you to the website that lists the currently serving commissioners.”
A link went to all current and past commissioners. Under Weintraub’s photo, it said, “Democrat December 2002 to February 2025.” For the four remaining current commissioners, the date line reads instead, “Currently serving.”
Her former FEC ally, Democrat Ann Ravel, stirred up reports on Weintraub’s resistance this week when she made the absurd claim that Trump ordered Marines to take the stubborn commissioner out. The podcast she appeared on later apologized for the “false claim.”
As commissioner, she was critical of Trump and Republicans and was a key player in recent years when the FEC was the most politically divided and unable to agree on cases.
Vice Chairman James “Trey” Trainor, who will now lead the FEC, said that the four who remain at the FEC work well together.
“As the vice chair I will serve as acting chair in the absence of the elected chair. It takes four votes to do anything so we’ll be required to work together. That being said, the four of us that are remaining have worked well together over the past few months,” the Republican told Secrets.
The FEC has six seats, and they are evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans. Republican Sean Cooksey recently resigned to take the job as counselor to Vice President JD Vance.
It is unclear if Trump will nominate replacements soon to the agency that largely focuses on campaign financing.
