Trumpworld consultant Alex Bruesewitz announced he would not run for the seat of retiring Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) in a statement timed to former President Donald Trump’s endorsement of another Republican in the race.

Bruesewitz, a Palm Beach-area adviser in the former president’s orbit, had teased a campaign in his home state of Wisconsin for months. Little more than a week ago, he touted a poll showing him with a 20-point lead in a hypothetical primary matchup.

But he opted to endorse oil and gas businessman Tony Wied instead on Sunday, ending months of speculation about his entry into the race. His announcement came minutes before Trump issued his own endorsement for Wied.

“A big part of putting America first is not putting yourself first,” Bruesewitz said in a statement. “If I truly believed I was the best candidate for this moment and truly believed the time was right, I would be running.”

“But right now I believe that getting President Trump back in the White House is what I need to remained focused on, and that will be my mission until November,” he added.

Bruesewitz had made a series of trips to Wisconsin to test the waters for a bid, meeting with local county chairmen and possible donors in the state. He met Wied on his first visit back in mid-February, he told the Washington Examiner, and ultimately helped recruit him to mount a run.

Wied, who recently sold a chain of dinosaur-themed gas stations, is not a declared candidate for the seat but announced on X that he would launch his campaign alongside Bruesewitz on Monday night. His chief competitor is expected to be former state Sen. Roger Roth, who has establishment support from Wisconsin heavyweights such as former Gov. Scott Walker.

Trump derided Roth as a RINO “clone” of former House Speaker Paul Ryan and “no friend to MAGA.”

“He should drop out of the Race NOW,” Trump said of Roth on Sunday.

Gallagher, who is stepping down from Congress at the end of next week, leaving the seat vacant until next year, himself ran afoul of Trumpworld for declining to vote for the impeachment of President Joe Biden’s border chief, Alejandro Mayorkas. Gallagher’s relationship with Trump soured over the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Had Bruesewitz entered the race, he would have had the backing of House Republicans aligned with the former president. Reps. Jim Banks (R-IN) and Matt Gaetz (R-FL), among others, had offered him preemptive endorsements.

Bruesewitz, who uses his large social media following to act as an attack dog for the former president, has family ties to the 8th Congressional District and grew up in nearby Ripon, Wisconsin, but moved to West Palm Beach to be close to Mar-a-Lago in 2019.

He did not rule out the possibility of running in the future.
