In a White House statement, Trump pointed to his executive order titled “Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness” that directed Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, saying it “has long been an integral asset to our once burgeoning Nation and has remained an indelible part of America.”
The president added that it is “fitting and appropriate for our great Nation to come together and commemorate this momentous occasion and the renaming of the Gulf of America.”
In footage of the proclamation signing posted on X, Trump called the day “even bigger than the Super Bowl.”
