Trump clarifies NATO stance amid controversial negotiation story
Former President Donald Trump Explains His Stance on NATO
On Monday, former President Donald Trump clarified his position on NATO after sparking controversy with a story about his tough negotiation tactics with world leaders to support the alliance.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump, who is seeking a second term in the White House, argued that member nations should contribute more to NATO’s collective defense by meeting the 2% minimum GDP defense investment guideline with the help of a strong U.S. leader.
“When I told the 20 countries that weren’t paying their fair share that they had to PAY UP, and said without doing that you will not have U.S. Military Protection, the money came rolling in,” Trump proudly stated, emphasizing how he strengthened NATO.
Trump continued, “After years of the United States covering the costs, it was a beautiful sight to see. But now, without me there to demand payment, they are falling back. We are spending over 100 billion dollars more on helping Ukraine than NATO.”
“NATO needs to equalize and do it now. They will comply if properly asked. If not, America first! Make America great again,” Trump asserted.
This social media post came after Trump faced criticism for a story he shared at an event in South Carolina, where he claimed that NATO was “busted” until he pressured allied countries to increase their defense spending.

Some interpreted Trump’s comments as suggesting that he would neglect the United States’ duties under Article 5 and even side with Russia in the event of an attack on a NATO ally.
President Joe Biden, also seeking a second term in the 2024 election, responded to Trump’s remarks, stating, “The promise of NATO – that an attack on one is an attack on all – keeps American families safe. Any individual who questions the durability of that commitment poses a threat to our security.”
While data from last summer showed that only one-third of NATO allies were on track to meet their spending targets, a White House spokesman argued that the alliance is “more relevant” and “stronger” under Biden’s leadership.
Nikki Haley, Trump’s former rival in the GOP primary and ambassador to the United Nations, emphasized, “The last thing we ever want to do is side with Russia.”

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg responded, stating that “any suggestion that allies will not defend each other undermines all of our security, including that of the U.S., and puts American and European soldiers at increased risk.”

Senator Marco Rubio, who has endorsed Trump in the 2024 election, expressed no concerns about Trump’s comments on NATO. Rubio explained, “What he’s basically saying is that NATO was broke or busted until he took over because people weren’t paying their dues. And then he told the story about how he used leverage to get people to step up and become more active in NATO.”
How did Trump’s comments about encouraging Russia to attack NATO members affect the alliance and its commitment to Article 5?
11 NATO allies were on track to meet the 2% GDP defense investment guideline, Trump argued that more needed to be done to ensure the alliance’s military readiness. He pointed out that the United States had been shouldering a significant portion of the costs and that it was time for other member nations to step up.
Trump’s assertion that his tough negotiation tactics yielded positive results for NATO holds some truth. When he pushed for member nations to increase their defense spending, many countries did respond and the alliance saw an increase in financial contributions. However, critics argue that Trump’s approach was divisive and may have strained relationships with allies.
The controversy surrounding Trump’s comments stems from his suggestion that he would “encourage” Russia to attack any NATO member that fails to meet its financial obligations. This led to concerns that he might not fulfill the United States’ commitment to Article 5, which states that an attack on one NATO ally is considered an attack on all. Some interpreted Trump’s remarks as potentially siding with Russia over NATO allies.
In response to Trump’s comments, President Joe Biden reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to NATO and emphasized the importance of the alliance in keeping American families safe. Biden’s statement highlights the potential security risks posed by anyone who questions the durability of NATO’s commitment.
As the 2024 election approaches, it is expected that NATO and defense spending will remain an important topic of discussion. The alliance plays a crucial role in maintaining peace and security among member nations, and the issue of burden-sharing within NATO will continue to be debated.
While there may be differing opinions on the best approach to NATO and defense spending, it is clear that former President Donald Trump believes in the importance of member nations meeting their financial obligations. He argues that a strong U.S. leader is needed to ensure that member nations contribute their fair share to NATO’s collective defense. Whether Trump’s tactics were as effective and constructive as he claims remains a subject of debate, but his stance on NATO reflects a desire to prioritize American interests while maintaining strong alliances.
