The campaign of Make America Great Again Inc., a political action committee, announced earlier that in the 24 hours since the former president was indicted by a New York grand jury, it had raised over $4 million.
The indictment is related to a business records investigation surrounding a “hush money” payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels in 2016, an alleged affair which Trump has denied. The indictment makes Trump the first-ever U.S. president to face criminal charges.
The former president’s campaign and supporters view the investigation and the indictment as an “unprecedented political persecution” and “blatant interference” in the 2024 presidential election, with Trump being the leading Republican candidate.
Bragg, the Manhattan District Attorney, has pushed back on the characterization of the investigation against Trump as politically motivated.
Trump’s defense lawyers are likely to raise several issues during the arraignment, including that the statute of limitations bars the alleged charges and that the case may be based on a faulty legal theory.
Donald Trump’s lawyer Joseph Tacopina has announced that he plans to file numerous motions to dismiss the case, including one based on selective prosecution and prosecutorial misconduct.
Trump’s arraignment hearing, which will not be televised, is set to begin at 2:15 p.m. local time on April 4.
Amid the heightened security at the Manhattan Supreme Court, Donald Trump arrived in New York City and spent the night at Trump Tower ahead of the arraignment hearing. Trump’s supporters are planning a rally near the courthouse to show their support for him.
