Trump Grand Jury Hearing Canceled Wednesday
The investigation on allegations of Donald Trump making illegal payments to a porn star has been suspended for the day, according to a source with knowledge of the matter. The grand jury in New York City that has been hearing the evidence won’t meet on Wednesday but may meet on Thursday.
The grand jury has been meeting regularly to consider evidence regarding one of the many legal cases against Trump, who is gearing up for a comeback bid for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024. However, the members were told to stay home on Wednesday, and no clear conclusion has been reached, said the anonymous source.
If charges were filed, Trump will have to travel to New York from his home in Florida for a mug shot and fingerprinting, which could cause unrest. Critics of the New York investigation argue that it is politically motivated, while a majority of those surveyed feel the payment of hush money to a porn star is a believable accusation, according to a recent poll.
Trump has previously denied the claims of the affair and said that Cohen made the payments independently. Meanwhile, his Republican allies have criticized the investigation led by Manhattan District Attorney, Alvin Bragg, as politically influenced.
Trump and his political allies are currently facing two criminal investigations, and his handling of sensitive government documents after leaving office is also under federal investigation. Trump has escaped legal consequences on many occasions, including an impeachment in the White House and a probe by Congress regarding his contacts with Russia during his presidential campaign.
As news regarding the investigation continues to circulate, Trump and his supporters are capitalizing on the headlines by sending fundraising messages to their supporters. A fundraising email sent on Tuesday was labeled “Barricades arrive at Manhattan Criminal Court” and included a photo that purportedly showed a metal barrier being unloaded from an NYPD truck, trying to fuel the fire of his followers. Some Democrats are concerned that such a move would have a negative effect, emboldening Trump who is known to take more daring actions when faced with outrage.
