Trump Slams New Speaker Nominee Tom Emmer: ‘A Tragic Mistake!’
Former President Donald Trump unleashed his fury on Tuesday over the nomination of Republican Rep. Tom Emmer of Minnesota to become House Speaker.
Emmer secured majority support from Republicans in the closed-door House Republican Conference voting, but fell short of the 217 votes needed for a floor majority and to be elected as speaker, according to The Washington Post.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump expressed his hope that Emmer never becomes speaker, criticizing him for not respecting the power of a Trump endorsement and for spending more time defending Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar than supporting Trump.
Trump referred to a 2019 incident in which Emmer disapproved of chants directed against Omar during a Trump rally.
Trump questioned Emmer’s loyalty to Republican voters and whether his recent pro-Trump stance is genuine.
Everyone who votes for Emmer on the House floor, I’ll actively work to primary them out.
That includes MTG, Lauren Boebert, Matt Gaetz, or any of them.
If I wanted a neocon, Big Pharma, George Soros stooge as Speaker, I would’ve voted Democrat.

Trump warned that voting for Emmer, whom he labeled a globalist RINO (Republican in name only), would be a tragic mistake for the Republican Party.
According to a blog post by The Washington Post, about 25 Republicans refused to back Emmer during a roll call vote, and five Republicans voted “present.”
Republican Rep. Jim Banks of Indiana expressed his refusal to support Emmer, accusing the left flank of the conference of blocking Speaker-designee Jim Jordan and nominating the most liberal member of leadership.

Republican Rep. Bill Huizenga of Michigan described the situation as a “dumpster fire.”
The House has been without a speaker since Oct. 3, when former Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted by a vote triggered by Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida.
House Republicans initially chose Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana as speaker, but he stepped down due to lack of support. Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio won the majority of votes in the conference but lost three floor votes.

How has the nomination of Tom Emmer for speaker divided the Republican Party?
Out a permanent speaker since the resignation of Nancy Pelosi in August, and the nomination of Tom Emmer has been highly contentious within the Republican Party. Emmer, who previously served as chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee, was seen as a frontrunner for the speaker position due to his experience and support from many Republicans.
However, Trump’s criticism of Emmer raises questions about the unity within the party. Trump’s endorsement has traditionally been seen as a valuable asset for Republican candidates, and his disapproval of Emmer signifies a potential divide within the party. Trump’s criticism of Emmer’s supposed lack of loyalty to Republican voters and his support for Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar certainly adds fuel to the fire.
It is also noteworthy that a significant number of Republicans have refused to back Emmer, with some accusing him of being a “globalist RINO.” This further highlights the divisions within the party and the struggle to find a consensus candidate for speaker.
The lack of a permanent speaker has left the House in a state of disarray, with key legislative priorities left in limbo. The inability to elect a new speaker reflects poorly on the Republican Party and raises questions about their ability to govern effectively.
The nomination of Tom Emmer as speaker has become a major point of contention within the Republican Party, with criticism from both Trump and fellow Republicans. The House is in desperate need of a strong and effective leader, and it remains to be seen whether Emmer will be able to rally enough support to secure the position.
Overall, the nomination of Tom Emmer as speaker has sparked significant controversy within the Republican Party. Trump’s criticism and the refusal of some Republicans to support Emmer highlight the divisions within the party and the challenges they face in finding a unifying leader. The House is in desperate need of a permanent speaker to effectively govern and address key legislative priorities. The coming days will reveal whether Emmer can overcome these challenges and secure the necessary votes for the position.
