Trump Jan. 6 pardon would begin with 961 ‘patriotic Americans’ – Washington Examiner
The article discusses President-elect Donald Trump’s promise to pardon individuals involved in the January 6 capitol riot. A key defense group reports that nearly two-thirds of those facing legal consequences from the events are classified as nonviolent defendants, totaling 961 individuals. The broader context shows that 1,593 people have been implicated in arrests, trials, or convictions related to the riot. Vice President-elect J.D. Vance indicated that the pardons would likely prioritize those convicted of nonviolent charges, such as trespassing. The article highlights the ongoing legal issues faced by these individuals and sheds light on the complexity of the Justice Department’s actions against them.
Trump Jan. 6 pardon would begin with 961 ‘patriotic Americans’
President-elect Donald Trump’s promised pardon of some of those involved in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot leading up to President Joe Biden’s election certification is likely to begin with slightly less than two-thirds of those swept up in the Justice Department’s dragnet.
Figures provided by a key Jan. 6 defense group put the number of nonviolent defendants at 961 and said many more were wrongly accused by the Justice Department of violent acts that day.
Overall, said Look Ahead America, there have been 1,593 people caught up in legal cases, trials, and convictions on Jan. 6 charges.
Vice President-elect J.D. Vance said over the weekend that the president is likely to start with those who faced or were convicted of charges of trespassing and other nonviolent acts.

“If you committed violence on that day, obviously, you shouldn’t be pardoned. There’s a little bit of a gray area there, but we’re very much committed to seeing the equal administration of law. And there are a lot of people we think in the wake of Jan. 6 who were prosecuted unfairly. We need to rectify that,” said Vance.
Trump has been unclear on exactly who will get an initial pardon. Several key allies, notably Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), have sought a pardon for all involved, arguing that they’ve been in jail long enough.
She and others have said that the Jan. 6 felons deserve to be treated better, and she has compared their treatment to the hands-off approach to violent Black Lives Matter and antifa rioters.
“That’s what I’m going to push for, even the Jan. 6 defendants that are serving time in prison right now, whether they fought with police officers or pushing and shoving in the tunnel. Maybe they even did damage, broke a window, and climbed in the Capitol. I think they’ve served enough time. They didn’t kill anybody, they didn’t rape anybody, they didn’t invade our country like all these illegal aliens. I think they’ve served enough time, and they’re political hostages,” Greene recently told Secrets.
“My view is every single one of them needs to be pardoned and released. And you know when I always say this, compare it to antifa and BLM rioters and protesters. Over 95% of charges dropped, let these people out of prison, give them their lives back. It’s time. It’s been too much,” she added.

Look Ahead America Executive Director Matt Braynard said Monday, “We applaud J.D. Vance’s commitment to those who, in his words, were ‘provoked’ or received ‘garbage trials.’ The new administration represents a rising sun, pushing back the dark night of injustice that America has endured under the Biden administration.”
In a statement revealing the numbers of those involved in the dragnet, he added, “There are currently 1,593 Americans who’ve been arrested by the Biden administration’s Department of Justice. 961 of them have not been charged with any violent acts, and many of those charged with ‘violence’ face trumped-up or false accusations from corrupt prosecutors. J6ers who have gone to trial have endured abuse from prosecutors and judges who willfully based their decisions on documented lies. While left-wing protesters who engaged in identical actions during past protests received mere slaps on the wrist, the J6 patriots have faced over-prosecution and -sentencing so egregious that even the Supreme Court ruled it was unconstitutional.”
