Trump’s 2024 reelection path leaves former allies behind.
Former President Donald Trump Turns on Republican Leaders
Former President Donald Trump has caused a stir within the Republican party by turning on several leaders whom he had previously claimed to endorse and support. As the frontrunner in the 2024 Republican presidential primaries, Trump has maintained a substantial lead over his competitors. However, he has chosen to distance himself from certain political figures whom he accuses of disloyalty.
Noteworthy Leaders Trump Has Turned On
- Kim Reynolds
- Ron DeSantis
- Brian Kemp
Trump publicly criticized Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds for remaining neutral in the crowded 2024 Republican primary. He expressed his disappointment on Truth Social, stating that he had previously endorsed Reynolds and helped her win the governorship. However, he now feels snubbed by her decision to remain neutral.
One of the most prominent examples of Trump’s change of heart is his relationship with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Despite DeSantis being Trump’s top challenger for the party’s presidential nomination in 2024, Trump still maintains a significant lead over him in the polls. Trump has labeled DeSantis as “disloyal” for running against him and has made him the primary target of his attacks.
Although Georgia Governor Brian Kemp aligns with Trump’s political views, their relationship soured during the 2020 elections. Kemp’s refusal to take action regarding the state’s votes after Trump’s loss led to Trump’s ongoing criticism. Trump even went as far as endorsing former Senator David Purdue to replace Kemp in the Georgia Republican primary, but Kemp ultimately emerged victorious.
It is clear that Trump’s endorsements and support are not guaranteed, and he is willing to turn on those he perceives as disloyal. These recent rifts within the Republican party highlight the complex dynamics at play as the 2024 presidential race unfolds.
