Trump nominates Herschel Walker for ambassador to Bahamas
President-elect Donald Trump nominated former Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker to be the U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas during his second term in the White House.
Trump made the announcement Tuesday evening in a post to Truth Social, saying that “Herschel has spent decades serving as an Ambassador to our Nation’s youth, our men and women in the Military, and athletes at home and abroad.”
“During my First Term, he served as Co-Chair of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition,” Trump continued. “Herschel has traveled to over 400 Military installations around the World, removing the stigma surrounding mental health. He represented the United States at the 1992 Winter Olympics as a member of the U.S. bobsled team.”
Trump’s relationship with Walker goes back to when Walker first rose to prominence as an NFL player in the 1980s. The winner of the coveted Heisman Trophy in 1982, it was not until later in his life that Walker made the transition from sports to politics.
After serving as a co-chairman on the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition during Trump’s first term, Walker ran for Senate in Georgia in 2022.
Despite Trump’s endorsement, Walker failed to oust incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) two years ago. Following a campaign plagued with controversy, the former NFL player lost the election 51.4%-48.6%.
However, Walker’s nomination for the plum diplomatic position in the Bahamas will mark a political comeback for the former Senate hopeful if he is confirmed.
Trump had previously teased a military defense role for Walker. In early November, the president-elect suggested the ex-football player might oversee a missile defense shield system for the U.S.
