Trump: No Time for Retribution in Second Term
Former President Donald Trump Walks Back Retribution Comments
Former President Donald Trump has stated that he will not prioritize “retribution” during a potential second term in the White House, in a surprising change of tone from his previous campaign rhetoric.
During a live town hall event in Iowa, Trump sat down with Fox News hosts Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum. The event coincided with a CNN debate between Trump’s Republican primary opponents, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley.
Baier asked Trump about his plans for “retribution and looking backwards” in a second term. Trump responded by highlighting the various hoaxes and false accusations he believes were targeted at him during his first term.
“Well, first of all, a lot of people would say that’s not so bad,” Trump replied. “Look, what they did: Russia, Russia, Russia hoax; the FBI/Twitter hoax; the 51 intelligence agents hoax – all of these different hoaxes that they did. You know, a lot of people would say that’s probably quite normal.”
However, Trump quickly shifted his focus to the future, emphasizing his commitment to making the country successful once again.
“I’m not going to have time for retribution,” Trump asserted. ”We’re going to make this country so successful again, I’m not going to have time for retribution. And remember this: our ultimate retribution is success.”

These comments appear to be a departure from Trump’s previous promises of “justice” and “retribution” to his supporters. In a speech at CPAC last year, he declared himself their voice and vowed to fight for their retribution against those who had wronged them.
“I will totally obliterate the deep state. I will fire the unelected bureaucrats and shadow forces who have weaponized our justice system like it has never been weaponized before. It’s sick. These are sick people,” Trump passionately stated. “I will put the people back in charge of this country again. The people will be back in charge of our country.”
The dueling events – Trump’s town hall and the DeSantis/Haley debate – occurred just days before the first primary contest in Iowa, scheduled for January 15.
Why do political analysts believe Trump may be changing his tone towards his political opponents
Ian collusion, I was proven right. They lied about that. They lied about Ukraine. They lied about so many things. And you know what? I have been totally exonerated. The Mueller report came out and said that there was no collusion, no obstruction. So, they lied about me.”
Trump went on to express his frustration with what he perceives as unfair treatment by the media and his political opponents. However, he stated that he would not focus on seeking revenge if he were to be reelected.
“I think it’s more important to focus on the future,” Trump said. “We have so much work to do in this country. We have to rebuild our economy, continue to create jobs, and make America great again.”
Trump’s comments come as a surprise to many, as he had previously promised to go after his political opponents, including his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, and former President Barack Obama. During his 2016 campaign, Trump famously said that if he were president, Hillary Clinton would be “in jail.”
Political analysts speculate that Trump’s change in tone may be an attempt to appeal to a broader base of voters as he gears up for a potential reelection campaign. By presenting himself as a leader focused on the future and prioritizing the needs of the American people, Trump may be trying to shed the perception of being vindictive and divisive.
Additionally, Trump’s decision to walk back his retribution comments may also be influenced by legal considerations. Pursuing criminal charges against political opponents can be a complicated and lengthy process, one that may divert attention and resources away from other pressing issues.
However, some skeptics remain unconvinced by Trump’s change of heart. They argue that his track record of making inflammatory statements and engaging in personal attacks raises doubts about his sincerity. They believe that Trump’s recent statements may simply be a strategic move to improve his public image.
As the 2020 election approaches and the political landscape continues to evolve, only time will tell whether Trump’s words on retribution will be matched by actions. Regardless, the former president’s comments mark a notable shift in his rhetoric, one that leaves many wondering what other surprises may be in store.
