Gov. Chris Sununu: Trump’s Lack of Governor Endorsements Indicates a Problem
Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH) raised concerns on Sunday about former President Donald Trump’s level of support within the Republican party. Despite his status as a former president, Trump only has the endorsement of four Republican governors, which Sununu believes is indicative of a problem.
“If he’s a former sitting incumbent president and the leader of the party and he only has four Republican governors behind him, that tells you there’s a problem,”
Sununu made these remarks during an interview with Jon Karl on ABC’s This Week. Karl had asked Sununu to respond to Gov. Kristi Noem’s (R-SD) recent endorsement of Trump, making her the fourth Republican governor to do so. Trump also enjoys the support of Govs. Henry McMaster (R-SC), Jim Justice (R-WV), and Mike Dunleavy (R-AK).
However, there are two Republican governors, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND), who are running against Trump for the 2024 nomination. Gov. Kevin Stitt (R-OK) has endorsed DeSantis, who is currently second to Trump in most polls. Additionally, former Vice President Mike Pence has received the endorsement of Gov. Eric Holcomb (R-IN).
Sununu’s Analysis of the Situation
Sununu explained that many governors, like much of the Republican base, are currently observing the political landscape and waiting to see how things unfold. He believes that as the presidential primary field narrows down, non-Trump supporters will consolidate their support behind another candidate.
“My sense is there’s a lot of governors kind of sitting on the sidelines saying ‘how does this all play out?’ just like most of the Republican base is, like there’s a lot of time to go, we’ve only had one debate,”
Sununu emphasized the significance of Trump’s lack of support within the Republican base, stating that it indicates a real problem. He believes that if the field narrows down to a one-on-one competition between Trump and another candidate, the other candidate will likely come out on top by the time of the convention.
In response to Sununu’s comments, Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung highlighted the number of endorsements Trump has received from governors, U.S. Senators, and U.S. Representatives, claiming that Trump has more endorsements than any other person in the race.
According to Sununu, while Trump had good ideas as president, he failed to deliver on them. He believes that the Republican party needs to find a conservative leader who can effectively fulfill their mission.
As the governor of New Hampshire, the first-in-the-nation primary state, and with his significant popularity, Sununu’s endorsement could carry considerable weight. When asked if he plans to make an endorsement ahead of the Republican primary, Sununu confirmed that he will, but he did not disclose which candidates are on his “short list.”
