“A President, after election, gets a choice of 1 in 7 desks,” he explained on Truth Social. “This desk, the ‘C&O,’ which is also very well-known and was used by President George H.W. Bush and others, has been temporarily installed in the White House while the Resolute Desk is being lightly refinished—a very important job. This is a beautiful, but temporary replacement!”
This will mark the second movement of the Resolute Desk since Trump took office. It was partially disassembled when he arrived in order to make way for the return of the Reagan Rug.
Each of the five most recent presidents has used the Resolute Desk, though others have sat in its place inside the Oval Office throughout history. As Trump noted, President George H.W. Bush used the “C&O Desk” in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Queen Victoria gifted the 1,300-pound desk to Hayes, and it has been used off and on ever since. The C&O desk was built in 1920, though Bush was the only president to use it regularly while in office.
Trump says federal government should ‘take over’ DC
Trump has tried to customize multiple aspects of the presidency during both of his terms in office. Notably, he ordered a new Air Force One to be built during his first term, one he’s still waiting to receive in term two.
He has asked billionaire backer Elon Musk to pressure Boeing to deliver the new jet, and will hope for speedier work as he refinishes the Oval Office furniture.
