Trump promises new head of National Archives

President-elect Donald Trump revealed his plan to replace Archivist of the United States Colleen Shogan once he takes office.

Trump’s announcement comes after the National Archives was at the center of the classified documents case against him. The case was dismissed by Judge Aileen Cannon in July.

“We will [have a] new archivist,” Trump said on the Hugh Hewitt Show on Monday.

Shogan was appointed to lead the National Archives after the department reported to the Department of Justice that some of the documents Trump handed over were marked “classified,” sparking the allegations that Trump had mishandled documents since leaving the Oval Office. Since becoming the archivist in 2023, she complied in releasing documentation surrounding John F. Kennedy’s assassination and thousands of more documents to aid in the attempted impeachment of President Joe Biden.

Federal law allows the president to remove the archivist but requires that the president “communicate the reasons for any such removal to each house of the Congress.”

The archivist is responsible for preserving founding documents, including the Constitution and Declaration of Independence, as well as documents from each presidential administration. The National Archives Building is hosting a temporary exhibit to honor the late Jimmy Carter, which includes his documents from Camp David, where he negotiated peace between Egypt and Israel while president.
