Trump removes security protection for Mike Pompeo: Report

President Donald Trump reportedly removed security protection for former State Secretary Mike Pompeo.

Another former top aide, Brian Hook, was also stripped of protection, four people familiar with the developments told the New York Times. The protection, believed to be provided by the State Department, was removed Tuesday. Additionally, former Trump national security adviser John Bolton’s security service was removed Monday during the first hours of Trump’s presidency.

The outlet reported that the president has told people he doesn’t want anyone who worked under Pompeo during his first term in his second administration.

Hook was singled out and fired by Trump within 13 hours of taking office in a Truth Social post. He was a presidential appointee to the Wilson Center for Scholars, a position given by former President Joe Biden.

The reason for stripping Pompeo and Hook’s security detail wasn’t immediately known. Pompeo has fared better than many other former Trump officials but was publicly blacklisted late last year. His hawkish views made him unpopular with the president’s MAGA base.

He flirted with a 2024 presidential campaign, criticizing Trump in the process, but ultimately decided against it.

In March 2022, the State Department revealed that it was paying $2 million per month to provide security for Pompeo.

The revocation garnered some criticism, as the Biden administration provided them security after the intelligence community assessed that there was a legitimate threat against their lives from Iranian government agents.

Bolton criticized the decision to remove his security protection.

“I am disappointed but not surprised that President Trump has decided to terminate the protection previously provided by the United States Secret Service,” Bolton said. “Notwithstanding my criticisms of President Biden’s national-security policies, he nonetheless made the decision to extend that protection to me in 2021.”

“That threat remains today, as also demonstrated by the recent arrest of someone trying to arrange for President Trump’s own assassination,” he added. “The American people can judge for themselves which President made the right call.”

Trump, Pompeo, Hook, and Bolton are all believed to be targets of assassination by Iranian intelligence due to their roles in the 2020 assassination of Gen. Qasem Soleimani, Quds Force leader.

Others believed to be possible targets of Iranian assassination include former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper, former national security adviser Robert O’Brien, retired Gen. Mark Milley, former deputy national security adviser Matthew Pottinger, and two former National Security Council officials, Victoria Coates and Robert Greenway.
