Trump claims DOJ sent him target letter in Jan 6 probe, hinting at imminent indictment.
Trump Reveals He’s a Target of Grand Jury Investigation
Former president Donald Trump dropped a bombshell on Tuesday, announcing that he had received a letter from Special Counsel Jack Smith, confirming that he is the target of a grand jury investigation into his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election result.
“Smith sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social media site.
Despite the shocking revelation, Trump did not provide any evidence to support his claim. A spokesman for Smith’s office declined to comment on the matter.
Legal Battle Heats Up
In another legal battle, defense attorneys and federal prosecutors are set to make their first appearance in Florida before U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon. This case involves charges against Trump for mishandling classified information and obstructing justice.
Trump, who is currently the front-runner for the Republican nomination in the 2024 election against Democratic president Joe Biden, was charged last month with unlawfully retaining national defense documents after leaving office in 2021, as well as conspiring to obstruct government efforts to retrieve them.
It’s worth noting that Smith is also leading the prosecution in this case.
