Trump claims he can unite people on abortion.
Trump Discusses Approach to Federal Abortion Ban
In a captivating interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker, former President Donald Trump shared his strategy for a potential federal abortion ban.
“It’s a very polarizing issue. Because of what’s been done, and because of the fact we brought it back to the states, we’re going to have people come together on this issue,” he expressed.
President Trump emphasized his intention to form a bipartisan group, listen to all perspectives, and foster consensus.
“We will agree to a number of weeks, which will be where both sides will be happy. We have to bring the country together on this issue.”
15 Weeks?
He asserts that the activists advocating for unrestricted abortion represent an extreme viewpoint that even many pro-life Democrats oppose.
“Nobody wants to see five, six, seven, eight, nine months,” he stated, emphasizing the need to eliminate laws that allow the termination of babies even after they are born alive.
When asked if he would sign a 15-week ban if it reached his desk, he responded with a firm “no.”
“Let me tell you what I would do. I will collaborate with all groups and strive for a mutually acceptable solution,” he explained. “We will determine a specific number of weeks or months that will satisfy the majority. After all, 92 percent of Democrats do not support abortion after a certain period of time.”
While many have proposed a “15-week” ban, which falls early in the second trimester, he emphasized the importance of involving more stakeholders before considering any legislation.
“I would sit down with both sides and negotiate something, resulting in peace on this issue for the first time in 52 years,” he declared, refraining from stating his support for a federal ban.
“I won’t say whether I would or wouldn’t,” he added, expressing pride in overturning Roe v. Wade and returning the power to regulate abortion to the states.
“For 52 years, people, including Democrats, wanted it to be a state matter so that states could make the right decisions,” he noted. “I accomplished something that nobody thought was possible by terminating Roe v. Wade and giving pro-lifers the opportunity to negotiate for the first time.”
He clarified that the consensus he seeks could result in state-level actions rather than a federal ban.
“It could be at the state or federal level. Frankly, I don’t care,” he stated. “From a legal standpoint, it’s probably better to remain a state issue, but I can live with it either way.”
“The number of weeks is more crucial,” he emphasized, highlighting the significant shift in public opinion on abortion in recent years. “Even the most influential anti-abortion advocates now support banning abortion after a certain period. And you know what? They didn’t support it just a year ago.”
Former Vice President Mike Pence, who previously advocated for a complete abortion ban without exceptions, recently urged other GOP candidates to support a federal 15-week ban.
Exceptions
He specifically called out Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, the runner-up among GOP candidates, for his six-week ban.
“I think what he did is a terrible thing and a terrible mistake,” he criticized, without providing a specific reason. He stressed the importance of including exceptions in any abortion ban. “I believe there should be exceptions. In cases of rape, incest, or when the life of the mother is at risk, exceptions are crucial. It’s very important.”
Tudor Dixon, a Republican candidate who ran for the governor’s seat in Michigan last year but was unsuccessful, recently revealed that President Trump had advised her on abortion policy. She admitted that she failed to heed his advice to adopt a different approach to discussing abortion.
“We couldn’t change our stance in time, and you were absolutely right, sir,” Ms. Dixon acknowledged.
“That’s what happened to many others, but not to me because there’s a way to address it. They are the radicals. You have to explain it. And I believe exceptions are very important. You and I discussed that,” President Trump affirmed.
DeSantis Responds
Mr. DeSantis’s campaign took to social media to respond after President Trump criticized Florida’s six-week ban, questioning his political rival’s conciliatory approach.
“Trump says he will compromise with Democrats on abortion so that they’re nice to him,” the campaign wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “Ron DeSantis will NEVER sell out conservatives to win praise from corporate media or the Left.”
Mr. DeSantis’s communications director, Andrew Romeo, added that previous compromises with Democrats had led to “disastrous” outcomes, such as an unfinished border wall.
Several states have enacted “heartbeat” abortion bills, which prohibit the procedure once a fetal heartbeat is detectable, typically around the six-week mark. Most of these states have included exceptions in their abortion laws from the beginning. However, Texas initially passed a no-exceptions ban but later added exceptions.
Why does Trump emphasize the need for exceptions in the Texas abortion law?
Crucial,” he stated.
Former President Trump also expressed his view on the recent Texas law that bans most abortions after approximately six weeks of pregnancy. He did not explicitly state whether he supports or opposes the law, but he emphasized the need for exceptions.
“I think it’s up to the courts to decide. But I would have liked to see the exceptions included,” he said.
Trump’s approach to a potential federal ban reflects his goal of finding common ground and fostering unity. He believes that by bringing together people from different perspectives and listening to their opinions, a consensus can be reached.
However, it is important to note that a federal abortion ban is a complex and contentious issue. It involves balancing the rights and autonomy of women with the interests of unborn children and the values of different individuals and communities.
Regardless of one’s stance on abortion, Trump’s emphasis on dialogue and collaboration is an important reminder of the need to approach sensitive and divisive topics with open minds and a willingness to find common ground.
