Trump Says ‘Illegal Leaks’ Indicate He’ll ‘Be Arrested On Tuesday Of Next Week,’ Calls For Protests
A social media post by former President Donald Trump on Saturday morning stated that “illegal leaks” The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office indicated that he would be arrested next week.
The remarks from Trump come after a report from NBC News said federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies were analyzing security assessments and making plans to prepare for the possibility that Trump could be indicted next week by a Manhattan grand jury in connection with a $130,000 hush money payment he allegedly made to porn actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign.
“ILLEGAL LEAKS FROM A CORRUPT & HIGHLY POLITICAL MANHATTAN DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE, WHICH HAS ALLOWED NEW RECORDS TO BE SET IN VIOLENT CRIME & WHOSE LEADER IS FUNDED BY GEORGE SOROS, INDICATE THAT, WITH NO CRIME BEING ABLE TO BE PROVEN, & BASED ON AN OLD & FULLY DEBUNKED (BY NUMEROUS OTHER PROSECUTORS!) FAIRYTALE, THE FAR & AWAY LEADING REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE & FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, WILL BE ARRESTED ON TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK,” Trump shared his posts to social media. “PROTEST, TAKE OUR NATION BACK!”
An arrest of a former president or current White House candidate would not be common, particularly since the underlying charge is a misdemeanor that dates back six years. Trump is expected to be charged with a felony by the prosecution. The accusation was made to hide an illegal contribution to his campaign, which some legal experts consider to be a weak charge.
The case centers on an alleged payment that Michael Cohen (ex-Trump attorney) made to Daniels in order to conceal a 2006 attempt between Trump and Daniels. Cohen pleaded guilty and was sentenced to time in prison.
Trump could have a problem with Cohen’s reimbursement by his company, even though they are legal. The company listed the payment as a legal expense, and cited a retainer agreement that Cohen had signed. The retainer agreement didn’t exist, and the reimbursement wasn’t related to any legal services provided by Cohen. This leads to a possible misdemeanor criminal conviction for falsifying records in business. Trump signed several checks to Cohen, according to the report.
If the prosecution can prove that Trump committed the offense, they may make it a felony. “‘intent to defraud’ included an intent to commit or conceal a second crime.”
Prosecutors claim that the second crime was that $130,000 of hush money was an illegal donation to Trump’s campaign. The money was used to stop stories for Trump’s benefit.
