Trump claims skipping RNC debate was the right call, citing poll dominance.
Former President Donald Trump Claims Victory in Polls After Skipping Debate
Former President Donald Trump confidently asserted on Tuesday that his decision to skip the first Republican debate was the right one, citing his continued dominance in the polls. Despite a slight decrease in support according to some polls, Trump remains firmly in the lead over his rivals.
Trump’s Poll Numbers Rise Despite Debate Absence
In a series of five polls conducted before and after the debate, Trump experienced a decrease in support in two polls, while the other three showed no change. Nevertheless, he maintains a significant advantage over his competitors.
“My Poll numbers are UP since the very boring, record-setting low (ratings!), debate,” Trump proudly announced on Truth Social. “Leading by BIG numbers. I made the right decision, and broke all records with the Tucker Carlson Interview!”
Although two post-debate polls indicated a decline in support for the former president, he still maintained a substantial lead. An Emerson College poll revealed that Trump had the backing of 56% of respondents before the debate, which decreased to 50% after the debate, a 6% drop. Similarly, Insider Advantage polls conducted just before and after the debate showed a 6% decrease in support, falling from 51% to 45%.
Trump’s Bold Decision and Legal Challenges
Trump made the bold choice to forgo the debate in Milwaukee, opting instead for an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. While eight other candidates participated in the debate, including Trump’s former Vice President Mike Pence, the interview and debate coincided with Trump’s surrender to the Fulton County Jail on racketeering and conspiracy charges. He is one of 19 defendants in the ongoing case.
Despite facing four court cases this year in Georgia, Florida, Washington, D.C., and New York, Trump’s popularity remains unwavering. He maintains a commanding lead of approximately 40 points over his toughest challenger, Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL), according to RealClearPolitics aggregated data as of Friday.
Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley experienced a slight boost in the polls following the debate. However, she has garnered more attention from voters in the general election rather than within the GOP nomination.
